Note from Ned Heite, 12 Sep 1999 -- Israel Church I am doing some research on properties near the "Whorekill Town" that was occupied around the middle of the seventeenth century near the present locality midway between Lewes and Rehoboth. This was an important settlement during the early colonial period, even though it was a mile from navigable water. It was extremely rare in those days for a colonial settlement to be any distance from water, and most of the houses of the period are less than a hundred yards from navigable water. At the time Whorekill Town was occupied, in the 1650s to 1670s, there were still "Indian Rights" to land in the area, which settlers extinguished by purchase. It's my theory that this was a creole settlement, possibly including the Plockhoy colonists intermarried with local native families. Israel Church, which is mentioned in several of the obituaries posted today, is quite an old establishment. In the 1868 Beers Atlas it is called a Mulatto Church. It was rebuilt in 1853 after a fire, but I don't know when it was established. Israel Church is literally within a stone's throw of the Whorekill Town site. What is interesting is that the family names of some members of that church are the same as the names of European settlers who patented land in the immediate vicinity, near the Whorekill Town, and there are very few names in the congregation that are found in the general population. Does anyone have any historical data on Israel Church, its constituent families, or the history of that locality?
