Mae Carter

1. Delaware marriage cert. #1891 1916 -- born Delaware. Daughter Sarah Eunice's birth cert. says Mae born Maryland.

2. GEDCOM file from John Carter 3/98 (spiff@atlantic.net): Mae Carter Ridgeway, the first wife of Mike C. Ridgeway, died while still a young adult.

According to Agnes Carter Newlin (Mike's first cousin), and subsequently her daughter Katherine Newlin Thomas, when Mae died the family did not have the resources to obtain her a burial plot, so Hopewell Carter Sr. & his wife Sarah Ridgeway Carter (Mike's aunt) were kind enough to let her be buried in their plot at Immanuel Union (Manship) Cemetery in Cheswold, Kent Co, DE. A marker was never placed on the plot to signify her burial, so only family members' memory can testify to this.

There was probably a Carter connection as well. Mae was the daughter of Isaiah Carter, said to be a brother of the George Carter whom Agnes always referred to as "Cousin George," although she could not describe "how" he was a cousin. George & Isaiah may have been descended from one of the brothers of Elizabeth Carty/Carter, Hopewell Sr's mother.

...As for Mary Elva Carter Morgan, daughter of Isaiah Carter, do you think she is a sister of the Mae Carter who married Mike C. Ridgeway? Mae was supposed to be a daughter of an Isaiah Carter as well, and I've been trying to figure out if they're the same Isaiah. Then we need to find clues as to
who he's descended from.

Mrs. Ridgeway was born Feb. 11, 1922, in Salem. She was the third child to Roscoe and Pearl Cuff.
She attended schools in that area and also went to Hopewell School and Bridgeton High School.
On Sept. 30, 1939, she married Paul J. Ridgeway Sr. of Dover, Del. Out of that union, they were blessed with three children. They made their home mostly around the Greenwich area and in their later years moved to Bridgeton.

She worked for Major Clothing, Bridgeton, as a seamstress for more than 20 years. She retired a little earlier than she had planned so she could take care of her beloved husband, who had become ill.
Mrs. Ridgeway was known for her love of flowers inside and outside. Her specialty was growing African violets. She delighted in cooking and baking. Many times someone would call, asking her to make her specialty, macaroni and cheese. She loved cooking Sunday dinners. Her favorite pastime was watching wrestling.

She lost her husband Nov. 7, 1993, after 54 years of marriage. She continued going on making a life for herself. She got to the point that she could not manage being by herself and in early October 2001, moved into the Maurice House, a home for assisted living. Shortly after, she started failing in her health.

In addition to her loving and devoted husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Herman Saunders Jr.; a son-in-law, Herman Saunders Sr.; and a brother, Richard Loatman.

She is survived by two daughters, Helen Morris of Dover and Emma Saunders of Cedarville; a son, Paul J. Ridgeway Jr. of Vineland; a sister, Marguerite Harmon of Bridgeton; two brothers, Lester Cuff of Bridgeton and Donald Cuff of Atco; a son-in-law, Carlos C. Morris Sr. of Dover; a daughter-in-law, Judi Ridgeway of Vineland; five granddaughters, Dr. Carla Morris and Dawn Morris, both of Dover, Cheryl Rodman of Cedarville, Sonya Saul of Milleville and Paula Ridgeway of Michigan; four grandsons, Carlos Morris Jr., Alfred Morris and Craig Morris, all of Dover, and Matthew Cunningham of Vineland; three great-grandsons, Carlos Morris III and Marcus Morris, both of Dover, and Scott Rodman of Cedarville, and three great-granddaughters, Rosie Rodman of Cedarville and Courtney and Caitlyn Saul, both of Milleville.

Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Padgett Funeral Home, 1107 N.J. Route 77, Bridgeton, where friends may call one hour earlier. The Rev. John Terenyi will officiate.
The pallbearers will be Carlos Morris Jr., Alfred Morris, Craig Morris, Matthew Cunningham, Todd Saul and Scott Rodman.

Burial will be Saturday in Fernwood Memorial Park Cemetery, Bridgeton.
