Subject: RE: Many Many Minnies (and Jeremiahs)

Apparently, there were THREE Minnie Durhams, and TWO of them were daughters of TWO DIFFERENT Jeremiah Durhams! (I also have record of a THIRD Jeremiah Durham, but thankfully he didn't have a daughter named Minnie!)

1. Minnie Durham, daughter of Benjamin Durham II and Sarah "Sally" Ann Handsor, was born 27 May 1873 and died 07 Nov 1921. This Minnie married Shadrach "Shade" Carney (1870-1933).

2. Minnie Durham, daughter of the ABOVE Minnie's brother Jeremiah Durham (1867-1936) and Lydia Muntz Durham (1866-1945), was born ?? and died ??. (In other words, she was Benjamin Durham II's granddaughter). This Minnie married Orville Mosely.

3. Minnie Durham, daughter of Jeremiah Durham and Margaret/Margaretta Mosely Durham, was born 09 Mar 1871 and died 12 Sep 1946. This Minnie married John?/Henry? Ridgeway (1861-1919). (His tombstone reads "Henry" but I have "John" in my notes) (??). I do not have the parentage of this Minnie's father, Jeremiah Durham. How does he connect to the other Durhams? Is this Jeremiah related to the other (above) Jeremiah? I have Margaret/Margaretta Mosely Durham's father listed as John Mosely, but
no mother listed.

The THIRD (Minnie-less) Jeremiah Durham that I have, was/is married to Vicktorine Coker, daughter of Alonzo Coker (1890-1957) and Rebecca Carney Coker (1897-1978). I do not know this Jeremiah Durham's parents, either, or how he might be connected to the other two Jeremiahs.

I am Nancy Parrish Cranden. I am Lisa Fredrick's cousin, William Mabins Parrish's first grand daughter (his 2nd marriage to Lucy Butler). I was 10 years old when my grandfather died, I am 50 years old now. We are all searching for his/our past and ancestry. There is so much we don't know, we were not aware of him being married before to Carrie Durham. I see by the email above that you contacted her - can you tell me if she would speak to us? I would very much like to talk with her. Lisa's father passed away last month - we want to continue to try to contact people that might help us so I told her I would be doing some searching on my own. Please write back to me, and thank you.

My grandfather's family has always been our family's mystery. What I've heard to, was that he was of Indian (Cherokee/Iroquois/Mohawk nation) background as well as maybe Irish, Scottish, French & Spanish. Recently, I made a fantastic find of some new relatives (Parrish family). The only thing is they're having the same problem I've had all these years of searching. Our families all begin with grandpa. (His wive's families are all accounted for.) My new relatives think we (as grandpop's relatives) are Leni Lenape.

We never knew his relatives at all. They were never spoken about or visited. (Although, I did hear that his brothers visited my grandparents when they were first married and they were dark. I do also understand that he had 13 brothers and sisters; what the breakdown of siblings was, I don't know. He had a one brother named Eugene and at least one sister. His parent's names were either Edward and Laura (Lara) or David and Laura (Lara) or Edward David/David Edward.). So, in my searching here's what I have learned (taken it with a "grain of salt" too.).

His name was William Mabins/Mabi(u)ns Parrish (William Mabins Parrish); born January 27, 1894 in Rougemont, NC. Lived in Baltimore, MD for a period of time and was married to "Carrie" who was from NJ; they lived in MD, and he worked for the B & O RR. They lived on Poppleton Street in Maryland -I've got them on the census.

27572 Rougemont North Carolina NC, Zip Code 27572 County Name Durham

William was in WW I; Ind 10/27/17 Pvt.; Pvt. 1class 12/14/17; corp 1/24/18, Btry A 351 FA, Hon disch 3/5/19, Overseas 6/19/18 to 2/16/19, Marbache Sector.

We believe he deserted "Carrie". Then shortly afterwards, starts a life with my grandmother Lucy Ann Butler of Bridgeton, NJ. We also believe that the "Mabins" stood for his mother's maiden name. There is a "road block" they're as well.

While working for the B & O RR, my grandfather was witness to his best friend's murder. His friend was playing cards on the train while my grandpop worked as a porter. His friend was accused of cheating and was shot dead on the spot in front of my grandfather and other card players. I would love to find out the name of his friend.

William M. Parrish also lived in Bridgeton, NJ just prior to marrying Lucy Ann Butler. (That's where they met. The story goes that he was walking down the street and spotted my grandmother sitting on the porch and fell in love instantly!) They moved for a short time just outside of Philia, PA near the Philia. Butlers. Then moved to Dunellun/Piscataway, NJ where they resided the remainder of their lives. Some other jobs held by my grandfather were - mortician's helper, foundry worker, and a security guard at a Muhlenberg hospital in NJ.

If this sounds like someone in your family or someone your family knew of, please contact me as I'm slowly finding out bit & pieces of my grandfathers' mysterious past and have hit a MAJOR "brick wall".
Any input at all would be greatly appreciated.

It seems to me that you have brick walls where you should not have. If you have your grandfathers WW1 discharge it should have his serial number on it. If you want more information about his tour of duty and where he was stationed when he was discharged you can get it FREE. Some of the records were destroyed by fired in 1926 but they will reconstruct them for you. When you do get them you can see where he was last stationed and there will be a special census for that Camp and he will be listed on it. You can get the records from: Check the zip code I couldn't make out if that was a six or a zero on my copy.

NATIONAL PERSONNEL RECORDS CENTER MILITARY PERSONNEL RECORDS Army Reference Branch 9700 PAGE AVENUE ST. LOUIS, MO 63132-5100

The B&O Railroad has a Genealogy Research center. The individual's social security number should be included with the request. To The RR Retirement Board In Chicago may have fees for their services. The Watkins Research Library contains microfilmed service records for many employees of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Co. who worked during the time periord of 1905 to 1971 go to this site for more information. They have an email for more information boresearch@mindspring.com http://www.borail.org/genes.html

Also when check Indian Heritage you must know the tribe. It is unlikley that he would be Cherokee Iroquois and Mohawk these people were miles apart. Now Leni Lenape is out of New Jersey that seems reasonable. You should check the Dawes rolls because even Indian had to prove their Indian Blood. The only race that had to prove that they are what they are.

He died in 1964. I have all his paperwork. Some say he's white (SS form & death cert.); the older stuff says he's black(WWI registration paperwork & discharge papers). Almanco, Durham & Orange counties are the ares to look in; which I've been doing; short of going there. I'm to the point of calling all the Parrish people in the area now.
