Funeral Program: Mary Virginia Sammons Reed, "Loving Bear," was born on January 13, 1933 on a farm near Cheswold, DE to the late William and Ella Durham Sammons. She was preceded in death by five brothers, Elmer, Morris, Otis, Stanley, and Jesse, by five sisters, Helen, Annabelle, Hazella, Lilly Beatrice, Bernice, and by baby Sammons. She died on June 11, 1999 in Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC at 8:03 p.m. after a long battle with heart disease. She is survived by her husband of forty-eight years, Allen Thomas Reed, by her daughters Amy Reed-Moore and her husband Jay, Nina Reed O'Bryan and her husband Toby, by the love of her life, her grandsons, Adam Michael Coker and his wife Cynthia, and Jay Reed Moore, and her great- granddaughters, Savannah Mary, and Cheyenne Rose Coker. She also leaves a devoted sister, Corinne Christiansen and her husband Andre L. Christiansen to mourn. In addition, she leaves many nieces, nephews, friends and co-workers who loved her dearly.
Mary loved to crochet, and she won many awards for her work at the Delaware State Fair. Often, we could not take possession of our prized afghan until after the fair. She shared her beautiful work with the whole family.
She also loved music. She could be heard singing hymns as she did her rounds at DHCI and in the school cafeteria. She even sang as she made the beds in the morning.
Her true love was her family. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. Her big bear hugs made everything seem OK again. Even when she was very ill, she asked her sister about her Chy babies and wanted us to take good care of them.
Education was very important to Mary. She encouraged everyone to further their education because as she said, "No one can ever take that piece of paper from you." She helped her children as well as her co-workers with words of encouragement when the going got rough. They were to always keep their eyes on the prize.
Mary loved life and lived it to the fullest extent that she could. She made the world a better place with her presence. We miss you terribly, but know that you are in a better place. Thank you for being you.
Remembrance: In Remembrance of Aunt Mary ReedSo many memories we all have: riding the ponies, going to the movies, just playing in the yard, waiting for the bus the first few days of school, taking the boys to the mall, listening to her talk about her grandchildren and family.
Mother said another friend has left us. She will miss her, as she would watch for her curtain to open; then, we'd know Aunt Mary was having a good day. We live on God's promise that we'll see her again as she is singing in God's heavenly choir. Eunice and family
