Louvenia Andrews 1921-2001

Louvenia Andrews of Philadelphia died after a lengthy illness Sunday, March 18, 2001, in her home. She was 79. Mrs. Andrews was born March 20, 1921, in Wyoming, Del., the daughter of the late Walter and Clara M. Summers.

For many years until her retirement, she worked in Philadelphia as a hotel housekeeping technician.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a son, Robert Mosley, in 1975; and her husband, Harold Andrews, in 1992. She is survived by two foster daughters, Lovina Mosley and Lyvone Mosley, both of Covington, Ga.; three sisters, Reba Fullman, Lillie George and Blanche Baynard, all of Dover, Del.; and a brother, Clifford Summers of Wyoming; a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and close friends.

A service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church, 20 Center St., Camden, Del., where friends may call two hours prior to the ceremony. Burial will be in Willow Grove (Del.) Cemetery. Arrangements by Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Dover.

 

Cornelius Bancroft Archer 1916-1997

Cornelius Bancroft Archer, 81, departed this life December 29, 1997 after an extended illness. Mr. Archer was born, raised and educated in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

He was a Mason. After his retirement from the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, he and his wife, Mildred, moved to Dover. After Mildred died in September, 1992, his health began to decline. He was born November 16, 1916 to Lola (Ridgeway) and Isaac Archer, both deceased. Mr. Archer was a man of many interests. He loved to build and remodel, renovating a couple of homes he owned. He liked music and dancing, and he was an avid sports fan. When he was younger he enjoyed children and opened his door to nephews and cousins who became part of his family's household on various occasions.

Left to mourn his loss are: his sister, Sarah Seeney of Cheswold; two sons, Richard of Manassas, Virginia and Laurence of Dover, Delaware; one daughter, Virginia of Vineland, New Jersey; 11 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends.

 

Lola Mae Ridgeway Archer 1883-1970

Mrs. Lola Mae Archer nee Ridgeway, born to Hester and Jeremiah, February 23rd, 1883. She had two brothers, Jim a half brother and Earl, both deceased. Her childhood was spent in Cheswold, Delaware where she attended Cheswold Methodist Church and Cheswold School.

Mrs. Archer came to Philadelphia in 1902 to seek employment. She met Isaac C. Archer and they were married June 29th, 1904.

Of this union four children were born: Hester, deceased; Cornelius, Isaac C. Jr. and Sarah Virginia.

In addition to raising her four children she was influential in many other children's lives, all of whom knew her as "Mom."

During her lifetime she was Mid-wife to many women and delivered 532 babies.

Lola and Isaac were charter members of Bright Hope Baptist Church. They both were instrumental in the organization of the church and served in various capacities in the church. Most notably - Isaac as Deacon, Clerk and Treasurer; Lola as a missionary and a member of the Ruth Sunshine Club and the Ivy League Social Club.

She departed from this life May 12th, 1970 at approximately 5:00 P.M.

She is survived by 3 children, 5 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and a host of friends.

Hazel Bailey 1906-2007

Hazel Bailey, 100, of Hopewell Township died early Sunday morning April 15, 2007 in the Cumberland Manor where she had been a resident for the past several years.  Born in Fairfield Township on Aug. 31, 1906, the daughter of the late John E. and Luella (nee Gould) Coombs, she was the wife of the late Roy King Bailey.  Mrs. Bailey lived in Fairfield Township until her marriage, when she and her husband moved to the Hopewell Township area where she had been a resident for the past 74 years.

She was formerly employed with the MC Schrank Company in Bridgeton for seventeen years as a Service Clerk, until her retirement. She was a former member of Trinity A.M.E. Church, Gouldtown, and she and her late husband were founding members of Bethany Christian Church in Bridgeton. Recently she became a member of the St. Teresa of Avila RC Church in Bridgeton.

Surviving her to cherish her memory are her sons Radcliffe Bailey and his wife Brenda of Atlanta, Ga., John Bailey and his wife Evelyn of Bridgeton, two daughters, Sandra Johnson and her husband Deacon William Johnson Sr. of Bridgeton, and Owney Bailey of Mays Landing, NJ, her son in law Earl Randolph and his wife Christine of Bridgeton, her ex son in law Alfred Lockette, thirteen grandchildren Radcliffe Bailey and his wife Lorin, Roy Bailey and his wife Rene, John Bailey and his wife Marie, Martin Bailey, Gary Bailey and his wife Norma, William Johnson Jr., Larry Johnson, Terence Johnson and his wife Danna, Eric Lockett and his wife Ayshai, Kevin Randolph, Serena Randolph-Wynder and her husband Gary, Darrell Randolph and his wife Michelle, and Richard Ford, thirteen great grandchildren Olivia, Radcliffe, Bria, Joi, Brittney, and John Bailey, Dane, Jaden, and Cree Johnson, Asha and Serena Lockette, and Rome and Sierra Wynder.  She was predeceased besides her husband Roy, by her daughter Joyce Randolph, a granddaughter, Deandrea Ford, three sisters Lillian Ashton, Mary Gould, and Marie Pierce, and one brother John E. Coombs Jr.

A Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Saturday April 21, 2007 from St. Teresa of Avila RC Church, 46 Central Ave. Bridgeton at 11:00 a.m.. The interment will take place in Gouldtown Cemetery, Fairfield Township  Friends may call on Saturday morning from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the church.

 

Joyce Jackson Bailey ~1941-2006

Joyce Jackson Bailey of Delmar died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006, in Deer's Head Coastal Hospice at the Lake, Salisbury Md. She was 65.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Phillip Allen and Mary Elda Morris Jackson; and a brother. She is survived by a son and a daughter-in-law, Gary and Dawnmarie Bailey of Leonardtown, Md.; five brothers; six sisters; and three grandchildren.

Friends may call from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday in Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St., Millsboro. Graveside service will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in Israel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Lewes.

 

Hilton Baines 1911-2003

Deacon Hilton Baines of Little Creek died Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at Shore Memorial Hospital, Nassawadox, Va. He was 91. Deacon Baines was born Dec. 25, 1911, in Painter, Va., one of 12 children of the late Robert and Olivia Harmon Baines.

He attended public school in Northampton County, Va. While he did not further his education, he en-sured that his children understood the value of an education. As a young man, Deacon Baines was united in holy matrimony to the late Clarease Dillard, and from this union, five sons were born, two of whom preceded him in death, Hilton G.R. and Lowell V. In search of a better life for his family, he left Virginia and moved to Delaware, where he found employment during the winter months at Newcomb and Hands Oyster Co., Port Mahon, for more than 20 years. During the summer months, he worked with John "Jack" Pleasanton as a crabber and deckhand for 15 years. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters employed Hilton for more than 25 years before his retirement. He also served as a foster parent for more than 40 years. He also derived a great deal of pleasure from working in his garden, fishing and crabbing, and being "Mr. Fix-It" at home. He was an avid hunter, and was known far and wide for his outstanding rabbit dogs. His family and friends remember him as having a strong work ethic, as an advocate for education and for his altruism. He was devoted to the foster children that came into his home and developed a special bond with them. He was active and lucid to the very end of his life, and for this, his family and friends give all praise to God. Deacon Baines became a Christian at an early age, was baptized and became a member of New Allen Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church, Franktown, Va. When he moved his family to Delaware, he joined Union Baptist Church and remained there for many years before becoming a founding member of Second Baptist Church. He remained a faithful member of Second Baptist Church, always ready to serve, until his health began failing. His proudest moment was in 1996, when he was ordained a deacon. He enjoyed working around the church, helping with the many building projects. He could be often heard, around the church, humming one of the traditional spiritual songs he so loved.

He is survived by his wife, Leonia Francis Baines; three sons and three daughters-in law, Robert and Margaret Baines of Dover, Jaines and Eddie Baines of Chicago and Dr. Tyrone and Shereatha Baines of Durham, N.C.; two stepsons, Ross Wilson of New York City and Alonzo Collins of Las Vegas; two step-daughters and one stepson-in-law, Eleanor Wilson of New Providence, N.J., and Margaret Collins Leonard and Melton Leonard of Browns Mills, N.J.; an "adopted" daughter, Loretta Muntz of Dover; an "adopted" son, Deshon Blue of Cleveland; a sister, Leanna Ayers of Maryland; 24 grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren; a rich extended family including numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and foster children; and many friends.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Second Baptist Church, 407 W. Loockerman St., Dover, where friends may call one hour earlier. The Rev. John E. Bagley Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Ebenezer AME Church Cemetery, Capeville, Va. Arrangements by John O. Morris Funeral Home, Exmore, Va.

 

Betty Elenora Baird  1934-2006

Betty Elenora Baird, aged 71, retired L.G. Nester Glass worker, died in her home at the Riverview West Senior Apartments in Millville, on Friday, June 23, 2006, following a courageous battle with lung cancer. She was born on July 17, 1934 in Bridgeton, N.J., to the late Samuel and Lillian Creamer Pierce. She was a 1952 graduate of Bridgeton High School.

Betty was president of the Riverview West Social Club, president of the Riverview West Welcoming Committee and Council and acted as the Fire Captain for the third floor of her building and worked as front desk building security on Monday nights. She was also a member of the Fairton Christian Center. She enjoyed gardening, playing dice in the social room, going on Atlantic City Casino Bus Trips, eating breakfast at the Millville Queen Diner and spending time with friends and family.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Dawn Pagnini and her husband Alan of Vineland; her sister, Clara Marrero and family of Millville and nephew Linwood Marshall, his wife Joyce and family of Millville. She is further survived by her nieces, nephews and countless friends. Betty touched the hearts of many people. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her companion, Morton Biggs Jr.; eight brothers, Carl, Elder, Herbert, Howard, Linwood, Ralph, Sam and Walter and three sisters, Annabel, Dorothy and Verna.

Funeral services will be held on Friday morning, June 30, at 11 o’clock at the Padgett Funeral Home, 1107 State Highway 77, Upper Deerfield Township. A viewing will be held at the funeral home on Friday morning between 9 and 11 o’clock. Florence L. Baker 1909-1975

Mrs. Florence L. Baker, 65, of Carson City, died last Wednesday at Carson City Hospital. She was born October 7, 1909, in Gratiot county, the daughter of John and Elsie Cott.. A lifetime resident of the Carson City area, she was a cook at a local restaurant and was a member of the First Congregational Church in Carson City.

Services for Mrs. Baker were held Saturday at the Burns-Schnepp Funeral Home, Rev. Neil McShane officiating, with interment at Carson City cemetery.

 

Pearl E. Mosley Baker 1942-1990

Pearl Evelyn Baker was the third child born to the late Kermit and Elva Mosley of Felton, Delaware. She met her demise at home on May 21, 1990 after a long illness. Pearl received her formal education in the Delaware Public School System. She graduated from William W. M. Henry Comprehensive High School in 1959 and became its first graduate to be employed as a secretary. Pearl met and married her devoted husband, Curtis, and from their union were blessed with three adoring children. Pearl will be most remembered as exhibiting “true” love. She was a caring daughter, a most admired Little and Big Sister. She was a most lovingly devoted wife and mother. The lives she touched, from her relatives to her friends, were wonderfully blessed from knowing her.

Left to always cherish her memory are her devoted husband, Curtis; her two loving sons, Curtis III and Anthony; her darling daughter, Angela; seven admiring brothers, Donald Mosley of Harrington, Nelson and Charles Mosley of Felton, James and Randall Mosley of Dover, Kenneth Mosley of Frederica, and Richard Mosley of Ellendale; her four devoted sisters, Ellen Scarborough, Joyce Gould and Darlene Gould, all of Wilmington, and Doris Spencer of Felton; their spouses and families, several uncles, aunts, and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

2. Newspaper obituary: Pearl E. Baker, 48, of 35 Dailey Drive, Felton, died Monday of cancer at home.

Mrs. Baker had been a secretary at William Henry Middle School, Dover.

She is survived by her husband, Curtis Jr., two sons, Curtis III and Anthony and a daughter Angela Baker, all at home; seven brothers, Donald Mosley of Harrington, Nelson and Charles Mosley both of Felton, James and Randall Mosley both of Dover, Kenneth Mosley of Frederica and Richard Mosley of Ellendale; and four sisters, Ellen Scarborough, Joyce Gould and Darlene Gould, of Wilmington, and Doris Spencer of Felton.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in Union Baptist Church, Dover, where friends may call at 2. Burial will be in John Wesley Cemetery, Frederica. Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Delaware Hospice Inc., Dover.

 

Hugh V. Banks ~1914-1989

Hugh V. Banks, 75, of 779 E. Commerce St. died suddenly early Thursday morning shortly after his admission to South Jersey Hospital System, Bridgeton Division.  Born in Philadelphia, the son of the late Floyd and Lilly Banks, he was the husband of Marian B. Edwards Banks.  A resident of this community for most of his life, he lived at his present address for 40 years.

Prior to his retirement in 1976, Mr. Banks was a clerk with the Bridgeton Post Office for more than 30 years.  He had previously been employed with the E.I. DuPont Co. and the former J.M. Elwell Co.  A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he was a Mason and in his earlier years had served as a scoutmaster in Penns Grove.

Mr. and Mrs. Banks celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary on May 9.  In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Melvin (Estella M.) Pierce of Groton,, Mass., and a grandson, Ryan Victor Pierce of Groton, Mass.  Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday from the Carll-Peterson-Ilacqua Funeral Home, 208 E. Commerce St., with the Rev.  Alvin M. Stokes Sr., pastor of Trinity A.M.E. Church in Gouldtown, officiating.  Burial will be made in Gouldtown Memorial Park.  Friends will be received one hour prior to the services Monday at the funeral home.

Marian B. Banks 1917-1990

1. Obituary:  Marian B. Banks, 72, of 779 E. Commerce St., died unexpectedly Sunday afternoon.  She was stricken with a heart attack in the Philadelphia International Airport after returning from visiting her daughter and she was rushed to the Metropolitan Hospital, where she died upon arrival. Born in Bridgeton, the daughter of the late Howard and Estella Pierce Edwards, she was the wife of the late Hugh V. Banks, who died in 1989.  A lifetime resident of this community, she lived at her present address 41 years.

Mrs. Banks was a homemaker, she was a member of the Trinity AME Church in Gouldtown, and had belonged to the Nanticoke Lenni Lenape Indians.

Surviving are a daughter Estella M. Pierce of Groton, Mass.; a brother, Rodney Edwards of Millville; two sisters, Viva Waters of Cherry Hill, Ethel Jackson of  Bridgeton, and a grandson, Ryan V. Pierce.  She a was predeceased by two brothers, Howard W. Edwards, Jr. and John Edwards.

Services will be held at noon Thursday from the Carll-Peterson-Ilacqua Funeral  Home, 208 E. Commerce St., Bridgeton, with the Rev.  Alvin M. Stokes Sr., pastor of the Trinity AME Church, officiating. Interment will be made in Gouldtown Memorial Park.  Friends will be received from 11 to noon Thursday prior to the services in the funeral home.

Allan C. Bard ~1930-2004

Allan C. Bard, aged 74, of Bridgeton, died unexpectedly at his home on Sunday, August 29, 2004. Mr. Bard was born in Bridgeton and was the son of Mildred Bard Hogans of Bridgeton. He had been a lifetime Bridgeton resident.

Prior to retiring in 1993, he had been employed with E.I. DuPont Co. Chambers Works in Deepwater for 30 years. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving in the U.S. Army and was a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church in Bridgeton.

Besides his mother, survivors include one son, Craig Bard of Bridgeton and one daughter, Cheryl Bard of Bridgeton.

Funeral services will be held Thursday morning, September 2 at 11am in the PADGETT FUNERAL HOME, 1107 State Hwy. 77, Upper Deerfield Twp. Burial will be in the Cumberland County Veterans Cemetery, Hopewell Twp. Friends will be received Thursday morning between 9 and 11 a.m. prior to the services at the funeral home. Gilbert Charles Bard Sr. ~1920-1990

1. Obituary: Gilbert Charles Bard Sr., 70, of Route 49, died Monday evening at South Jersey Hospital System, Bridgeton Division, where be had been a patient for one day. He had been seriously ill for the past five weeks.

Born in Lawnside, he was the son of the late Lewis and Anna Pierce Bard, and was the husband of the late Pauline Custis Bard. He had been a lifetime resident of Gouldtown.

Prior to retiring seven years ago, he had been employed with Vineland Transit Mix Co. for several years. He was a member of Gouldtown Volunteer Fire Co. and was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army in the European, African and Middle Eastern Theaters.

Surviving are two sons, Gilbert Charles Bard Jr. of Gouldtown, Gordon L. Bard of Bridgeton; stepmother, Myrtle Bard of Hopewell Township; two brothers., Lewis Bard of Gouldtown, Roland Bard of Baltimore, Md; two sisters, Mildred Hogans of Bridgeton, Viola Tucker of Millville; and a grandson. He was predeceased by two brothers, William Bard and Raymond Bard.

Funeral services will be held Saturday from the Padgett Funeral Home, Route 77, Bridgeton;

Interment will be in Gouldtown Memorial Park, Fairfield Township.

John T. Bard ~1934-2005

John T. Bard, 71, of Upper Deerfield Township, died Saturday, June 11, 2005, in South Jersey Regional Medical Center, Vineland. He had been in failing health for the past 6 months. The husband of Christina Pierce Bard, he was born in Elmer and was the son of the late William and Louise Johnson Bard. He had lived in Upper Deerfield for 5 years and prior to that had resided in Cedarville.

John had been employed as a truck driver with Ferrari Trucking Co. in Vineland for several years. He was a member of the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Indian Tribe. He enjoyed country music, fishing, hunting and playing his mandolin.

Besides his wife, survivors include: two sons, John Bard, Jr. and Michael Bard; five daughters, Cheryl Bard, Lucy Bard, Brenda Garfole, Kathy Garcia and Lisa Bard; one sister, Doris Carney; three brothers, Walter Bard, Benjamin Bard and Robert Bard; 22 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, William Bard and four sisters, Maryanne Gould, Edith Brent, Terry Sheffeld and Grace Steward.

Funeral services will be held Saturday morning, June 18 at 11 o'clock, in the Padgett Funeral Home, 1107 State Highway 77, Upper Deerfield Township. Burial will be in Fordville Memorial Park, Fairfield Township. A viewing will be held at the funeral home Saturday morning between 10 and 11 o'clock. Mariana Bard ~1931-2000

Mariana Bard, 69, of Bridgeton died Tuesday (6-13-00) in South Jersey Hospital-Bridgeton. Born in Elmer, daughter of the late William and Louise Bard Young (correction by Rose Ridgeway -- Louise Johnson Bard), she was a lifelong resident and a homemaker.

She was a tribal member of the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Indians.

Pauline L. Custis Bard ~1928-1982

Pauline L. Bard, age 54, of R.D. #7 Bridgeton-Millville Pike died suddenly Saturday Evening, April 3, 1982 in the Freehold Hospital, Freehold, N.J. She was born in Fairfield Township and the daughter of the late Hazel and Peter P. Custis and the wife of Gilbert C. Bard, Sr.

She had resided in Fairfield Township all of her life. The deceased was a member of the Trinity A.M.E. Church, serving for a time as a Sunday School teacher. She was also a member of Gouldtown Fire Co. #2's Ladies Auxiliary and served as a school cafeteria aide for a number of years. Pauline worked for the M.C. Schrank Co., for a number of years. She graduated from the Bridgeton High School.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her two sons, Gilbert C. Bard, Jr., and Gordon L. Bard both of Bridgeton, a brother Peter P. Custis and several nieces and nephews.

 

William L. Bard ~1929-2002

William L. Bard, 73 of Vineland, formerly of Bridgeton, died Wednesday at his home. He had been in failing health for the past two years. Mr. Bard was born in Elmer and was the son of the late William B. and Louise Johnson Bard. The husband of the late Emily Scott Bard, he had lived in Vineland for four years and prior to that had resided in Bridgeton for most of his life.

Prior to his retirement in 1988, he had been employed with the E.I. DuPont Co. in Deepwater for 34 years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Survivors include: one daughter, Jacquelyn Bard, Vineland; four sons, William L. Loatman, Jr., Millville, Eugene Bard, Lawnside, Harry Bard, Vineland and Keith A. Bard, York, Pa.; four brothers, Walter Bard, Englewood, Calif., John Bard, Bridgeton, Benjamin Bard, Hopewell Township and Robert Bard, Vineland; two sisters, Edith Brent, Vineland and Doris Carney, Hawthorne, Calif.; 16 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Ann Bard, and two sisters, Grace Steward and Terry Sheffield.

Rev. Richard Myers will conduct funeral services at the Padgett Funeral Home, 1107 State Highway 77, Upper Deerfield Township, on Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Memorial Park, Hopewell Township. Friends will be received Wednesday between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. prior to the services in the funeral home.

 

Daisy Mae Barrett 1936-2000

Daisy Mae Barrett of Smyrna died Friday, Sept. 22, 2000, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 64. Mrs. Barrett was born Feb. 18, 1936, in Greensboro, N.C., the daughter of Frances Haith and the late Handy John Haith.

She received her education in the Thomas D. Clayton School in Smyrna. Mrs. Barrett was a member of Little Mount Olive Holiness Church, Smyrna.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by four children, Harvey Barrett Jr. of Hartly, Harry Barrett of Frederica, Leona Barrett and Christine Mosley, both of Dover; six grandchildren, Pam Wood, Luther Mosley, Harry Jr., Jennifer, Sierria and Travis Barrett; a companion, John Barrett; 11 sisters, Cynthia Moses, Shirley Palmer, Suevilla Haith of Smyrna, Jullette Caldwell of Cheswold, Sylvia Brittingham, Lorraine Brinkley, Stephanie Bull of Dover, Betty Ann Burris of Dover, Pamela Williams and Attlay Pritchard, both of Wyoming, and Francis Wood of North Carolina; four brothers, Jerry Haith of Smyrna, James Haith, Randolph Haith, and Anthony Haith of Dover.

Mildred V. Carney Barton ~1909-1992

Mildred V. Barton, 83, Farmers Bank retiree, of Hopewell Township, formerly of Dover, Del., died Monday at the Cumberland County Medical Center.   Born in Cheswold, Del., she was the daughter of the late Burton Carney and Jennie (Morgan) Carney Dean, and the wife of the late William H. Barton. She resided in Fairfield Township with her niece, Naomi Ridgeway, prior to moving to Hopewell Township.

Before retiring in 1974, she was employed for 25 years by the Farmers Bank (Melon Bank) of Dover. She was a member of Emmanuel Union United Methodist Church of Cheswold.  Besides her niece, she is survived by two nephews, Jerry and Roland Ridgeway of Fairfield Township. She was predeceased by a sister, Marie Mosley, in 1985.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday from the Emmanuel Union United Methodist Church, Cheswold, with the Rev. William “Billy” Ridgeway officiating.  Interment will be in Sharon Hill Cemetery, Kent County, Del. Friends will be received Saturday one hour prior to the services at the church.  Arrangements are under the direction of the Edwards and Son Funeral Home of Salem.

 

Viola Pierce Baudet 1890-1969

Mrs. Viola Baudet, 79, died Sunday evening at her son’s home, 756 Stewart’s Lane, after an extended illness.

She was born in Deerfield Township, the daughter of the late Jonathan E. and Dorothy Pierce, and was the wife of the late Henri Baudet. She was a lifetime resident of this area.

Mrs. Baudet is survived by her son, Chester J. Pierce; a grandson, Chester Pierce, Jr.; a daughter-in-law, Gertrude Pierce; a sister, Mrs. Hazel Pierce, Greenwich, and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Wednesday at 2pm from the Lively Funeral Home 656 East Commerce Street, with interment at Fernwood Memorial Park. Friends may all Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

 

Helen Reba Baynard ~1925-2000

Helen Reba Baynard of Star Hill died Thursday, June 22, 2000, in her home surrounded by her family. She was 75. Mrs. Baynard was the daughter of the late Clarence C. Burris Sr. and Mary Harris Burris.

She retired from Playtex, Inc. of Dover after more than 30 years of service working in the canteen. After her retirement she became a foster grandparent in the Caesar Rodney School District. She loved children and youth. She also loved the church and working to ensure the success of the church. Mrs. Baynard was a devout Christian who was very active in her church until her health began to fail. She was a faithful and dedicated member of St. James Union AME Church in Frederica. Mrs. Baynard also was a member of The Missionaries, Ladies Aide, Layman's Organization, pastor's aide, trustee, stewardess, Ushers Unit No. 3 and the Interdenominational Ushers Unit No. 3. She also was the 3rd vice president of the National Association of Ushers Unit No. 3. Whatever she did, she did willingly.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vaughn Baynard Sr. She is survived by four sons, Vaughn Baynard Jr. of Boling Brook, Ill., Norman Baynard of Felton, Donald Baynard of Woodside and Charles Baynard of Dover; two daughters, Doris Faho of Frederica and Sylvia Baynard of Smyrna; three sisters, Delema Carter and Frances Mosley, both of Felton, and Louise Burris of Wilmington; two brothers, Clarence Burris Jr. of Milford and George Calvin Burris of Felton; eight grandchildren; a surrogate mother to many of her nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Zion Church, Queen and Fulton Streets in Dover, where friends may call from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Burial will be in Sharon Hills Cemetery, Dover. Arrangements by Deborah E. Harris-Nock Funeral Services, Greenwood.

1. Herman J. Beckett, 52, of RD 8, Parvins Mill Road, Upper Deerfield Township died late Friday evening in Bridgeton Hospital after having been stricken at his home earlier. He had been in failing health the past two years. Born in Hopewell Township, the son of John H. Sr. and Viola Carney Beckett of Bridgeton, he was the husband of Olive Johnson Beckett. The couple had celebrated their 27th wedding anniversary Jan 10.

Mr. Beckett had been employed as a driver for LoBiondo Bros. Inc. for 21 years, retiring in June of 1978 due to ill health. He was a member of Teamsters Local 676.

Surviving in addition to his wife and parents are: four brothers, James K. of Pennsylvania, Kennard of Bridgeton, Donald of Minotola, and Leroy of Monroeville; three sisters, Mrs. Norman Dorothy Carney and Mrs. Charles Blanche Pierce, both of Bridgeton, and Irene Beckett of Pennsylvania; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. He was predeceased by three brothers, Robert W., John H. Jr., and Charles E. Beckett.

Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Roland Coker on Tuesday at 2pm from the Garrison-Sray Funeral Home, Carlls Corner. Interment will be in the family plot at Fernwood Memorial Park. Friends may call Tuesday afternoon from 12:30 to 2 prior to the services.

1. Obituary: John H. Beckett, Sr., 79, of 9 Pau-Len Drive, Hopewell Township, died Tuesday afternoon at Bridgeton Hospital where he was a patient nine days. He had been in failing health for the past two years. Born in Dover, Del., he was the son of the late Kenneth and Blanche Morgan Beckett and the husband of Viola Carney Beckett.  Mr. and Mrs. Beckett would have observed their 59th anniversary this June.   Mr. Beckett was a self-employed farmer for most of his life in the Elmer area.

Besides his wife he is survived by four sons, James K. of Kinzers, Pa., Kennard W., at home, Donald of Minatola and Leroy Beckett of Monroeville;  three daughters, Dorothy Carney of RD 1, Blanche Pierce of Fairton and Irene Beckett of Philadelphia, Pa.; 17 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.  He was predeceased by four sons, Charles, John, Jr., Robert and Herman Beckett.

The Rev. Kathleen Murphy Beckett ~1922-1999

Kathleen M. Beckett of Rehoboth Beach died Tuesday, June 8, 1999, in her home. She was 77.  Mrs. Beckett was born on July 15, 1921, in Englewood, N.J., the daughter of the late John Murphy and Katherine Murphy.  She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Merlin Beckett, a son, Gary Beckett and a brother, John Murphy.  She is survived by two daughters, Barbara Sommer and her husband, Dr. Michael Sommer of Rehoboth Beach and Susan Bashant of Honolulu.

Memorial Mass will be 5 p.m. Saturday at St. Edmonds Catholic Church. Burial will be private. Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to: Delaware Hospice, Southern Division, 600 North Du Pont Hwy., Georgetown, DE 19947.

 

Melvin C. Beckett ~1923-2001

Melvin C. Beckett, 78, of Hopewell Township died Monday morning at his home. He had been in declining health for the last few years.

The husband of the late Ruth I. (nee Hermann) Beckett, who died in 1989, he was born in Bridgeton and was the son of the late Joseph and Ula May Sniffen Beckett. Mr. Beckett was a lifelong resident of the Bridgeton area.

He lived at his current address since 1965 and before that lived in Shiloh for several years.

He was employed prior to his retirement in 1992 by Ebner's Dairy in Vineland as a driver. Mr. Beckett also worked for several years as a milkman for Shoemaker Dairies in Bridgeton. In addition, he sold real estate for Rogers Reality in Bridgeton.

Mr. Beckett was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II and served in the 342nd Field Artillery Battalion in Rhineland and Central Europe. An expert marksman, he received two Bronze Service Stars.

He was a member of the Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in Bridgeton and former Melody Chorus at the church. He enjoyed watching professional wrestling on television and he loved to go fishing and read.

Survivors include one daughter, Penny J. Welden of Bridgeton; three grandchildren; and one sister, Myrtle Hofstetter of Millville. He was predeceased by two brothers, Joseph and Arnold S. Beckett and one sister, Frieda Hughes.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton. Mr. Beckett's nephew, the Rev. H. Raymond Hughes, a retired Methodist pastor, will officiate. Burial will be made at Fernwood Memorial Park in Hopewell Township. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Friday afternoon one hour prior to the services. Peter Beckett, of Detroit, aged 71 years, died Tuesday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. H. R. Holmes, 210 Bingham St. Gangrene of both legs was the cause of his death, the disease being the result of an injury received some years ago while working in Cramp's shipyard at Philadelphia.

He came to Lansing with his wife to visit his daughter, and was taken ill here. Ten children and his wife survive him, only one of whom, Mrs. Holmes, is a resident of Lansing. Funeral services will be held at 210 Bingham St. at 1 o'clock, local time, tomorrow, and the interment will be at Mt. Hope.

He is survived by a son, Franklin Benson of Smyrna; two brothers, Fred Benson and John Benson of Dover; and five sisters, Laura Huggins of Bridgeton, N.J., Dorothy Williams and Mary Benson, both of Dover, Carrie Mosley of Frederica and Catherine Benson of Vineland, N.J.

Ida Mae Benson of Wyoming died following a short illness Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 91. Mrs. Benson was born May 25, 1911, in Star Hill, daughter of the late Walter and Dorphine Abrams.

She received her education in the Star Hill and Booker T. Washington schools. She previously was employed at Dover Air Force and as a midwife.Mrs. Benson was a longtime member of First Borne Philadelphia Church of Christ in Viola. She served diligently in various capacities in the church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Nathaniel Benson Jr.; a daughter and son-in-law, Naomi Harmon and Thomas M. Harmon Sr.; a grandson, Anthony Benson; a great-grandson, Justin T. Lewis; three sisters, Virginia, Julia and Pauline; and four brothers, Maurice, Ferris, Howard and Walter.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Nathan N. and Elizabeth Benson; a sister, Venetta Abrams of Bronx, N.Y.; a brother, Samuel Abrams of Dover; three sisters-in-law, Alice and Dorothy Abrams of Dover and Carrie Abrams of Camden; nine grandchildren and the respective spouses of seven, Caron Harmon and John Branch, Thomas M. Jr. and Mary Harmon, Gordon Harmon, Cynthia and Gary Lewis, Andrew and Gertrude Hawkins, Larry and Joann Benson, Telessa and Odell Hargrove, Michael Benson and David and Ericka Benson; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

1. Newspaper obituary: DOVER — Charles Henry Sput” Bessellieu Jr. of Dover died of natural causes Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 42.

Mr. Bessellieu was the son of Constance M. Bessellieu of Dover. He attended Lake Forest High School, and was a member of the football and wrestling teams.

Mr. Bessellieu was a bus driver for Action Temporary Service before becoming ill.

He loved the Dallas Cowboys and NASCAR racing.

Mr. Bessellieu was affiliated with John Wesley United Church, Milford Neck, Frederica.

Charles Henry Bessellieu Jr., son of Constance and the late Charles H. Bessellieu, Sr., was born on May 9, 1957, at Kent General hospital in Dover, Delaware.

His demise was on Monday, December 13, 1999, following an extended illness His elementary and secondary education was acquired in the Lake Forest School District. He received a General Education Diploma in December, 1975. Charles was a very devoted son, brother, and uncle. He had a kind heart and close relationship with those he loved. He was affectionately known as “Sput” since he was born at the time the Russian Sputnik missile was launched. He was a groundskeeper at the Harrington Fairgrounds for a number of years and later became a van driver for Action Temporary Services, a job that he greatly enjoyed for five years.

Constance 'Connie' Mosley Bessellieu ~1934-2004

Constance "Connie" Mosley Bessellieu of Dover died after a brief illness surrounded by her loving family, Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital. She was 70. Mrs. Bessellieu was born May 22, 1933, in Cedar Neck, daughter of the late Thomas A. and Laura Gardner Mosley.

After graduation from high school she attended and graduated from Delaware State College. She worked for the State of Delaware in the Social Services Department and retired in 1981. She was an avid Washington Redskins fan. Mrs. Bessellieu was a dedicated member of John Wesley United Church, where she served as deaconess, treasurer, historian and worship leader. She was also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Dover Silhouettes, DSU Alumni Dover Chapter and Nanticoke Indian Association. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles H. Bessellieu Sr.; and a son, Charles "Sput" Bessellieu Jr.

She is survived by a daughter, Karen Andrews of San Luis, Mexico; a son, Thomas Bessellieu of Dover; two grandchildren, Jonathan Andrews and Morgan Hovington; a sister and brother-in-law, Barbara M. and Charles Jiggetts of Clifton, Va.; a sister-in-law and husband, Katherine and Zebulum Ross of Wilmington; and her mother-in-law, Beatrice Bessellieu of Georgetown.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in John Wesley United Church in Milford Neck, where friends may call two hours earlier. The Rev. Yvonne Brunson will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Instead of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the DSU Alumni Dover Chapter.

 

Jennie A. Bianco 1920-1999

Jennie A. Bianco of Hartly, formerly of Lindenhurst, N.Y., died of respiratory failure Tuesday, Aug. 3, 1999, in Sliver Lake Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Dover. She was 79.

Mrs. Bianco was born April 20, 1920, the daughter of the late Joseph and Grace Sisco Caruso.  She was a homemaker for most of her life.  She loved music and dancing, the outdoors and pets.  Mrs. Bianco was a member for more than 15 years of the Modern Maturity Center, Dover, where she was involved in many activities.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Antonio J. Bianco, in 1979; and a brother, Lenard Manzo.  She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Marie and Richard Dayton and Nancy Bianco, all of Hartly; four brothers, Frank Caruso, Fred Caruso, Phillip Manzo and John Manzo, all of New York; two sisters, Gloria Maurice and Ethel Fitzpatrick, both of New York, three grandsons, William J. Kraft III of New York, Joseph A. Kraft of Dover and John R. Dayton of Hartly; a granddaughter, Melissa Dayton of Hartly; three great-granddaughters, Maria Kraft and Frankie Kraft, both of New York, and Maddie Dayton of Hartly; and the wives of two grandsons, Donna Kraft of New York and Sallie Kraft of Dover.

Service will be 10 a.m. Friday in Lindenhurst Funeral Home, Lindenhurst, where friends may call from 3-5 p.m. and from 7-10 p.m. Thursday.  Friends also may today call from 7-8 p.m. today at Trader Funeral Home, Dover.  Burial will be in St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale, N.Y.

Obituary--Elizabeth Mae Durham Blair, Wife of the late Earl P. Blair died Monday January 16, 1978, At Lankenau Hospital in Montgomery County, Penna. Born in Concordville, Pa. she was the daughter of the late Rosie and Walter Durham of Media.

She matriculated at Chester High School, having majored in stenography and music. Upon graduation, in 1919, she studied under Prof. Samuel Desmond of the Julliard School of Music in New York. . . . Later she became a teacher of music, both vocal and instrumental ... She was organist and choir directress at various churches for over a period of thirty years... Upon moving to Philadelphia, she became active in several organizations, having received the “Chapel of The Four Chaplains Award” . . . She served on the Board of Auxiliaries at the now defunct Mercy-Douglas Hospital .. .Also, she was Sec-Treasurer of the Mercy-Douglas “Charity-Belles,” Vice-President and President . .. She has also received honors from other organizations including Misericordia Hospital for the great effort she put forth into charity work....

Surviving are a son Nelson E. , daughters: Rose Spivey, Flora (Teeny) Simmons, Muriel Martin, and a step-daughter Dorothy Mc Glotten...She also leaves to mourn, four brothers: Robert, Wilbur, Howell and Marshall Durham...also forty-five grands and fifty great-grandchildren.

Dr. Katus R. Blakey, former chairman of the Department of Community Dentistry, died on August 20 in Kingston, Jamaica.

Born in Louisa, Virginia on November 10, 1924, Blakey received his B.S. degree from Virginia State College. He received both his M.S. and D.D.S. degrees from Howard University and did postgraduate work at the University of Pennsylvania, Catholic University and the Institute for Graduate Dentists.

His professional life centered around the academic community. He was chairman of the Department of Biology at Bishop College in Texas; assistant professor of Biology, registrar and director of Public Relations at Delaware State College.

In 1957 he went into private practice in Northeast Washington and also accepted a part-time faculty position at Howard’s College of Dentistry. From 1969 to 1971, he served as chairman of Community Dentistry. During this period, Blakey, with the approval of the University Administration and the assistance of the faculty, students and staff, initiated a total health care program for indigent residents of Quitman County, Miss.

In 1971, Blakey went to Jamaica on leave of absence from the University to serve as the Dental Officer for the Jamaican Government.

A member of many professional organizations, including the American and National Dental Associations, Blakey is listed in Who’s Who in the South and Southwest U.S.A. He is on several boards, including the Board of Directors of O.I.C. A recipient of numerous awards, including the International Who’s Who Award for Community Service, Blakey was honored by Howard University as a distinguished alumnus for civic and community contributions 1969-70.

Blakey has published several articles on tooth implants, replants and transplants; he also delivered many papers and conducted many clinics on those subjects throughout the United States and the West Indies.

His University-wide participation included membership on the President’s Task Force for Urban Affairs, the Vice President’s Committee on Community Health and the University Senate Workshop, and he was Director, Academic Reinforcement Program.

Blakey served in the Armed Forces during World War II. He was staff director of Teacher Training with the 14th Naval District.

Blakey leaves his wife, Thelma and four sons, Reginald, Michael, Jeffery and Kevin; one brother, Gilbert, of Virginia; many relatives and friends.

2. Newspaper obituary: Dr. Katus R. Blakey, former registrar and professor of Biology at Delaware State college, died Wed., Aug. 20, 1975, in the University of Jamaica Hospital, Kingston, Jamaica. His age was not given.

After leaving Delaware State College in 1953, Dr. Blakey entered Catholic University to pursue study leading to the doctorate degree in biology. With a keen desire to aid humanity, he then transferred to the School of Dentistry at Howard University, where he earned the DDS degree in 1957 in oral surgery.

He was employed by the School of Dentistry at Howard University for a number of years, and at the same time conducted private practice and research in oral surgery. For the past four years, Dr. Blakey had been a resident of Port Antonio, Jamaica, where he continued his private practice and worked in the Community Health Program for the government of Jamaica.

A memorial service will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m., in the Howard University Chapel, Washington, D.C. Dr. Blakey is survived by his wife, the former Thelma Mosley of Frederica. They have three sons, Michael Louis, 22; Jeffrey Norman, 21; and Kevin Charles, 18.

 

Thelma Mildred Mosley Blakey ~1931-2003

Thelma Mildred Mosley Blakey of Miami died of emphysema Saturday, May 3, 2003, in her son's residence in Miami. She was 72. Mrs. Blakey was born in Milford Neck, near Milford, Del.

She graduated from Delaware State College (now University), Dover, Del., with a degree in biology. In the 1950s, Mrs. Blakey pursued a career as a medical technician at what is now Howard University Hospital. She spent part of the 1960s as a director of community-outreach programs for the American Cancer Society and as proprietor of The Shop, a Washington, D.C., art-house boutique that sold paintings. She left Washington in the 1970s to live in Jamaica. She subsequently lived in Dover in the 1980s, while working as director of Alumni Affairs at Delaware State College; subsequently lived in Capahosic, Va., and moved to Miami last year.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Katus Reginald Blakey, in 1975. She is survived by three sons, Michael of Capahosic, Jeffrey of Port Antonio, Jamaica, and Kevin of Miami; a brother; a sister; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in the Blakey family cemetery off Hardwick Mountain Drive, Barboursville. Arrangements by Preddy Funeral Home, Gordonsville, Va.

 

Harvey S. Bordley ~1922-1990

1. Obituary:   Harvey S. Bordley, 68, of Main Street, Fairton, died Sunday morning at the Veteran's Hospital in Elsmere, Del., where he had been a patient the past week.  He had been in failing health the past year and seriously ill the past two months.

Born in Carmel, he was the son of the late Benjamin and Mary Durham Bordley, and was the husband of Dorthea Bordley.  He had resided at his present address the past two years and had been an area resident all his life.

Mr. Bordley was a truck driver for C. Harrell Inc. of Elmer the past 10 years and prior to that had been with Cross Transportation for 31 years.  He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army 8386h (sic) Anti Aircraft Artillery Battalion attaining the rank of Staff Sgt.  He was a pilot and owned his own plane.  He was a lifetime member of the Disabled Vets No. 83, American Legion Post No. 82 of Millville, and a member of the Fairfield Presbyterian Church and a deacon of the church.

In addition to his wife, surviving are three daughters, Sandra Bordley of Bridgeton, Mary Hollingshead, Trudy Gray, both of Millville; a son, Harry B. Batten of Tucson, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. from the Fairfield Presbyterian Church, Main Street, Fairton with the Rev. Allan Story officiating.  Interment will be at Mt.  Pleasant Cemetery, Millville.  Friends will be received Tuesday after 7 p.m. at the Russell C. Maybelle Bordley ~1920-2002

1. Obituary: Maybelle Bordley, 82, of Bridgeton died Monday morning at the South Jersey Hospital-Bridgeton. She had been declining health for two months. Born in Daretown, the daughter of the late Luther and Maude Loatman Durham, Maybelle had been a Bridgeton resident for the past 15 years, prior to that she had lived in the Cedarville area and had been raised in Greenwich.

Prior to her retirement 14 years ago, she had been employed as a Librarian Assistant at the Cumberland County Library in Bridgeton for 17 years. She was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Bridgeton and the Nanticoke Lenni Lenape Indian Tribe also of Bridgeton.

Survivors include: one daughter, Sandra Bordley, Bridgeton and three sisters, Dorothy Burrell, Harmersville, Julia Durham, Santa Rose, CA and Jean Okonski, Cape Canaveral, Fla. She was predeceased by two brothers, Howard Durham and Leroy Durham and one sister, Edith Loatman.

Rev. Dr. Edward E. Martin, Jr. will read the Burial Office and celebrate a Requiem Eucharist at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 186 East Commerce St., Bridgeton on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 . Burial will be made in Fernwood Memorial Park, Hopewell Township. Harold Alvin Boswell ~1913-2004

Harold A. Boswell: of R.R. #4 Blenheim at Shrewsbury passed away on Tuesday, December 28, 2004 at London Unitversity Hospital. Born in Wallaceburg 91 years ago son of the late Henry Boswell and Sara Handsor. Dear husband of Dorothy (Davies) Boswell. Beloved father of Trevor and Sandy Sutton of London, Barry and Cairn Sutton of Vancouver Island, Alvin and Karen Boswell of Collingwood, Diane and Marvin Handsor of North Buxton, Geraldine and Wes Bailey of Whitby, Kevin and Evelyn Boswell of Amherstburg. Also survived by thirteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren, sister: Jean Meeham of Chicago as well as several nieces and nephews. Prededeased by

Harold Alvin Boswell:  A PROFILE

Harold was the first-born child of Hentry Boswell and Sarah Handsor.  Henry being the son of Isaac who was the brother of Henry. Harold was born on November 26 1913 in Wallaceburg, Ontario and was followed closely by a sister Jean and brother Jurald who were also born in Wallaceburg.

In March of 1917, Henry an Sarah moved their small family to Hanley Saskatchewan, which is located 50 miles south east of Saskatoon. Two more children were bornto the family, Wiliam and Grant, before their return to Ontario in November of 1923. When the family returned to Wallaceburg the youngest child Arnold was born.

On July 4, 1941, Harold joined the Canadian Army and was stationed in England from December 23, 1941 until his discharge in September of 1945. While in England Harold met and married Dorothy Sutton, a young widow with two small children.

Harold and Dorothy raised six children; Trevor, Barry, Alvin, Diane, Kevin, and Geraldine and have participated in the lives of thirteen gandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Harold farmed in the Blenheim, Ontario area until 1956 and then held Municipal employment until his retirement in 1978.

Harold was an active member of the Trinity Anglican Church in Blenheim by holding a Sexton's position for five years as well as being aWarden for three 2 year terms. His involvement in the Blenheim and Community Citizen's Group and his continuous volunteer work with the local Children's Aid Society left no room for boredom.  In the spring of 1992 the Children's Aid Society in Ottawa, Ontario honoured Harold and Dorothy for their 27 years of volunteer service.

 

Myrtle Durham Bridge ~1903-1982

1.  Obituary: Myrtle Bridge, 79, of 276 B, Cohansey View, died Monday night in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital where she was a patient for 10 days. She had been in failing health the past three years and seriously ill the past three months.

Born in Dover, Del., she was the daughter of the late Jeremiah and Lydia Muntz Durham and was the wife of the late William Bridge. She had resided at her present address the past seven years and prior to moving to Bridgeton had resided in Pennsauken for 40 years.  Mrs. Bridge had been employed at RCA in Camden prior to moving here and was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church of Bridgeton.

She is survived by two stepdaughters, Helen Carr and Mary Russo, both of Pennsylvania; a stepson, William Bridge of Pennsylvania, and, several nieces and nephews.

Services will be conducted on Friday at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Donald Inglish of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church of Woodbury from the Russell C. Sheppard Funeral home, 40- East Ave.
Interment will be made in Gouldtown Memorial Park.  Friends may call Friday morning prior to the services at the funeral home.

Charles E. Brittingham Jr. ~1934-1987

Charles E. Brittingham Jr. of R.D. 5, Dover, died Thursday. July 2, 1987, in Kent General Hospital, Dover, of cardiac arrest. He was 53.

Mr. Brittingham was a trainer and driver with the Standardbred and Horse Association for 37 years. He was a member of the U.S. Trotting Association and the Cloverleaf. He was a judge for the Little Dover Downs Trotting Association.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Brittingham of Dover; a daughter, Audra Brittingham, at home; five brothers, James Brittingham, Merrill Brittingham and Bob Brittingham, all of Smyrna, Joe Brittingham of near Kenton and Alvin Brittingham of Dover; and two sisters, Helen Hudson and Hazel Rochester of Smyrna.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday in Immanuel United Methodist Church, Cheswold, where friends may call Monday evening from 7 until 9. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery. Arrangements are made by Trader Funeral Home, Dover.

Eugene Brown, 56, a resident of Fairfield Twsp. died Saturday morning,  12 Feb 2005, at the South Jersey Healthcare-Regional Medical Center. He had been in failing health for the past four years. Born in Johns Island, South Carolina son of the late Roy and Irene Simmons Brown, he was the husband of Jacqueline Loatman Brown.

Mr. Brown was a long time resident of Fairfield Twp. and was employed for over 18 years with Steve’s Hot Shots Company in Vineland. An avid motorcyclist he was also a member of the Wheels of Soul Motorcycle Club of Bridgeton.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his two children, Lawrence Torrell Brown of Germany, and Kiesha Jackson of Bridgeton. One grandchild, Keyshawn Jackson of Bridgeton, three brothers Walter, Anthony and Elmo Lawrence Love Jr. all of Bridgeton, four sisters Nancy Ann Cooper and her husband Albert of Louisiana, Emmajean Love, Marie Love, Antoinette Love all of Bridgeton. Twelve nieces, Angela Brown, Raqueal Brown, Lynette Johnson, Tyeis Johnson, Teddra Love, Sherrem Love, Gina Gant, Tianna Love, Irene Love, all of Bridgeton, Tonya Cooper Harris and Quinyana Mosley both of Pine Hill, N.J. and Nikia Love of Delaware. Eight nephews Aazim Love, Walt Love Jr., Anthony Love, Shamar Love, James Pender Jr., Kenny Mosley, and Kevin Mosley all of Bridgeton, and Albert Cooper Jr. of Pine Hills N.J. Several great nieces and nephews and several aunts and uncles. He was predeceased by three sisters Viola Brown, Florence Johnson, and Willa Mae Love. He was also predeceased by his stepfather Elmore Love.

Funeral services will be held on Friday February 18, 2005 at the Union Baptist Temple Church South Pine and Willow Sts. at 12 p.m. The interment will take place in the family plot in Cedar Hill Memorial park, Hopewell Twsp. at the convenience of the family. Family and friends may call from 10 a.m. to 12:00 prior to services at the church. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Sray-Webster Funeral Home 62 Landis Ave. Carll’s Corner Upper Deerfield Township.

 

Lisa Ann Pierce Brown 1969-2002

 1. 20 Feb 2002  Lisa Ann Pierce Brown, 32, of Quinton Township, died Monday at her mother's home. She had been in failing health for the past three years. Mrs. Brown was born in Salem and was the daughter of Lorraine Johnson Gregg of Quinton Township and the late Carl Pierce, Jr. She had lived with her mother for the past two years and prior to that had resided in Blackwood.

She had formerly been employed as a security guard with Pep Boys in the Pureland Industrial Park. She was a member of Nanticoke Lenni Lenape Indians of Bridgeton.

Besides her mother, survivors include: her husband, Charles A. Brown; two sons, Ezekiel Samuel Evans, Jr. and Tyrone Kenneth Ellis, Jr., both of Quinton Township and her step-father, Charles Gregg, Sr., Quinton Township.

Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 in the Padgett Funeral Home, 1107 State Highway 77, Upper Deerfield Township. Burial will be in Fernwood Memorial Park, Hopewell Township. Friends will be received Saturday afternoon one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Mrs. Brown's Children c/o Lorraine Gregg.

OUR CENTER was greatly saddened on Feb. 17 with the passing of Lisa Ann “Little White Dove” Pierce Brown. Lisa was the daughter of Lorraine Pierce Gregg and stepdaughter of Charles Gregg. She was predeceased by her father, Carl Pierce Jr. Lisa had two sons Tyrone, age 11 and Zeke, age 7.

As a child she attended Quinton Elementary School and was a member of the Quinton Girl Scout troop. She graduated in 1987 from Salem High School and was a member of the National Honor Society all through her high school years. She graduated fourth highest in her class. We would like to note that in her yearbook she had quoted under Remembrances that her fondest memory was her Pop-Pop’s love. “Pop-Pop” being her grandfather, Chappy Pierce, and her Wish For the Future was, “More unity among God’s Children.”

She was a member of the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Membership Center and was elected and served as the Princess of the Tribe 1985-1986.

She took part in the annual powwow each year and the last few years was part of the Native America Worship Services held at the powwow grounds on Sunday mornings. She attended the Native American Services at the St. John’s Methodist Church at Fordville, N.J. and was a member of the Fight For Families Fellowship Church of Wilmington, Del.

She was employed at the Pureland Industrial Park at the Pep Boys Complex where she was a security guard, until ill health led to her disability. For many years she was employed at the Salem County School Systems where she served as administration assistant.

She was stricken with cancer in August, 1999 and waged a brave fight though her body was in constant pain from chemotherapy and radiation. She wanted so much to see her children grown. But on Feb. 17, at the age of 32, she left her earthly body to be at peace and in perfect health with the Lord.

She will be missed by her family and a host of friends. Quoting one of her friends, “She was an inspiration to all she came in contact with and her spirit was always strong and will shine forever.”

In addition to her mother, Lorraine, stepfather, Charles, sons Tyrone and Ezekiel, she leaves to mourn, her husband, Charles Brown and several aunts, uncles and cousins and the membership of the Native American family.

Those who served as pall bearers were: Issiac Marcano, Woodrow Furbush, Lindwood Mosley, Jerry Carney, Brian Carney and Nelson Carney Jr.

Also taking part in the services were Pastor James Hinmon, Rev. Roy Bundy, Tee Norwood, Rev. Matthew Brown, Urie Ridgeway and Will Mosley.

Arrangements were by Padgett Funeral Home. Feast of the Dead was at Colonial Rider’s Clubhouse following the services. Internment was Fernwood Memorial Park, Bridgeton.

In lieu of flowers it was requested that monetary donations be made to her sons, Tyrone and Ezekiel in care of their grandparents, Lorraine and Charles Gregg at 245 Quinton-Marlboro Road, Salem, N.J.


Phyllis Ridgeway-Brown ~1946-2001

Phyllis Ridgeway-Brown, age 55 departed this life on Saturday, March 3, 2001 at her home.

Born in Cheswold, DE she was the daughter of the late Leroy and Viola Ridgeway. Phyllis graduated from Booker T. Washington High School, currently known as Booker T. Washington Elementary School. Her favorite pastime was cooking and she recently retired from T. J. Maxx and Burlington Coat Factory to become a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband, Ronald E. Brown; her daughters, Portia Swanson and Teresa Morris; her son, Sanford Morris, Jr.; her daughter and son-in-law, Ursula and Emmanuel Velasquez; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Cameana and Keith Fleming; and a stepdaughter, Wymesa Brown; 4 sisters, Grace Jackson, Frances Jones, Shirley Morris, and Vanessa Crawford; 20 grandchildren; a devoted friend that Phyllis considered a sister, Doris Newman; daughter-in-law, Terri Patrick; and a host of uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, and friends; a predeceased brother, Leroy Ridgeway, Jr.

A funeral service will be held at 12 noon, Friday, March 9, 2001 at Harriet R. Tubman, United Methodist Church, 2200 N. Market Street, Wilmington, DE 19805 (302/656-2660). Rosella Brown ~1927-2001

Rosella ''Sis'' Brown, 74, of Fairfield Township, died Sunday, November 4, in the South Jersey Hospital-Bridgeton. Born in Bridgeton she was a life long resident. She was the daughter of the late Leon, Sr. and Emma Dean Gould and wife of Henry ''Hank'' G. Brown.

Rosella was a loving wife and mother, enjoying crocheting and going crabbing.

She leaves to cherish her memory her husband Henry ''Hank'', daughter Lola ''Peanut'' Willis, a son Roney ''Sonny'' Brown, a sister Evelyn Harmon all of Fairfield Township, grandchildren, Rhonda Pierce, Henry S. Brown, Devin Brown, and Herbert Willis Jr., five great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by a brother Leon Gould, Jr.

Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in the Edwards and Son Funeral Home, Inc., 208 E. Commerce St., Bridgeton. Friends may call at the funeral home after 9 a.m. Interment Gouldtown Memorial Park, Fairfield Township.

Barbara A. Whyte-Bryant, daughter of the late James Whyte and Ineza (nee Neal) Whyte Hughes, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, July 4, 2008, while a patient at South Jersey Healthcare-Regional Medical Center, Vineland, N.J. Mrs. Bryant was born Nov. 25, 1951, in Bridgeton, N.J., and was a resident of Millville for the past 20 years. She was employed for 31 years at Wheaton/Alcon, in Millville. She was a member of the Union Baptist Temple, Bridgeton.
