Elijah DeSoto Thomas, son of the late Lillie and Daniel Thomas, was born in Charlottesville, Virginia on November 2, 1887.

He attended the local public schools in the city of his birth.

He came north to Atlantic City, New Jersey with his father and worked as a bell boy at the Breakers Hotel where he was employed for two years.

At age eighteen, he came to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and resided with his cousin. He found employment as a messenger and delivery boy at Detweiler’s Bakery, 1913 Pine Street where he earned twelve dollars weekly.  Being very ambitious he learned the trade under Mr. Detweiler’s instructions end stayed under his employ until Detweiler’s death. Applying for the position of head baker at Thomon’s Bakery, he was challenged to show his ability which he did with the creation of  a unique recipe which later received a patent under Mr. Thomon’s name. This recipe was called ‘The Japanese Sponge Cake” and was the birth of the unique expertise that was his alone.

In 1927 he established his own business at his residence on South Seventeenth Street where he remained in business until his retirement.

On November 12, 1912 the bond of love was sealed in the union of marriage with the late Bessie J. Jackson of Seaford, Delaware. To this union was born one son, Ralph Carter.

Having joined the Old Cherry Street Memorial Church in 1906, he served with Christian dedication until his death on Saturday, October 8, 1977.

He became a member of the Board of Deacons and later became chairman. He served in this capacity for twenty-three years.  With deep love and humble devotion he served on the Benevolent Board and the Usher Board.  He was proud in the knowledge of being Reverend Charles S. Lee’s Water Father.

With his quiet and demur personality he graced all who were fortunate enough to have known him.

Being there whenever he was needed, whether to lighten a burden or give vintaged advice, he kept his cheery smile and pleasant manner even with the onset of his illness that began with a heart attack on Palm Sunday, 1977.

With precious memories,  heavy hearts and a deep gratitude to Our Father for having had him in our midst for so many years, he leaves to mourn one son, Ralph, daughter-in-law, Catherine, two grandchildren, Camille Thomas Butler and Duette Agnes and a multitude of loving friends.

Ralph Carter Thomas 1914-1995

In Loving Memory of Ralph Carter Thomas: Sunrise April 22, 1914; Sunset December 4, 1995.

Ralph Carter Thomas, son of the late Elijah DeSoto Thomas of Charlottesville, VA and Bessie Jackson Thomas of Seaford, DE was born April 22, 1914 in Philadelphia, PA.

He attended the local schools and was a graduate of Central High School for boys. He was Christened by the late Rev. Dr. Wm. Harrod at the Old Cherry St. Baptist Church and was later Baptized there as well. He was ordained a Deacon and served as vice-chairman of that board.

In 1953 he was joined in marriage with Katherine Newlin. To this union two daughters were born, Camille Butler of Springfield, VA and Duette Thomas-Herring of West Cape May, NJ.

Ralph had a deep love for horses and spent many years working with them in various locations along the east coast. He trained race horses for the late Daniel Kelly, uncle of the late Serene Highness Grace Kelly. Ralph was always a horseman, but having been trained as a baker by his dad, he joined the family business, Thomas’ Bakery in South Philadelphia. The business was subsequently expanded to include a luncheonette and he ran the business with his wife, Katherine.

In 1965 he decided to once again pursue his love of horses and became employed by the mounted police department of the city of Philadelphia as a hostler foreman. He retired in 1983. For over 30 years Ralph vacationed in West Cape May, N.J. and moved there in 1993. This move brought great joy to Ralph as he loved the outdoors and was, at last, free to spend his days planting his garden, enjoying the birds and all the friendly conversations with his West Cape May neighbors and friends.

Ralph was a 32° Mason and a Shriner. He was a member of the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Indians of New Jersey, Inc. He was proud of his native American heritage and embraced all the teachings and beliefs. Ralph was truly a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a man’s man—rough on the outside but so tender and loving on the inside.

He was always willing to help anyone in need; if he could help you out, he would. His sudden illness and rapid demise has shocked many. We wonder what we’ll do without him. How could someone so strong so quickly steal away? He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife Katherine, daughters Camille and Duette, sons-in-law Rickey and Terrell, grandchildren Paris, Briana, Jared, Proteus and Simeon, sister-in-law Clara, Constance and Syrethia, brothers-in-law Feliciano and Clyde and a host of relatives and friends.
