CIVIL WAR PENSION FILE PAGE IMAGES
Photographs or Xeroxes of all papers in the pension file, most in the order stored therein
Veterans, widows, parents, and minor dependents were eligible for pensions under certain conditions, and each of these was required to file an application as benefits were increased and coverage expanded over the years. Included in the pension files may be declarations by the claimant, statements of service from the War Department or the Navy Department, personal history questionnaires, family questionnaires, and affidavits by comrades-in-arms, relatives, and neighbors attesting to the validity of the claimant's declarations and copies of birth/death/marriage certificates. Where disability and need were factors in the decision, medical reports of physical condition were included.
All these documents were initially grouped by category in individual small folders. The documents were folded in into three parts to fit in the envelopes. Eventually, all the separate folders which constituted a veteran's pension record were taken out of the small envelopes and placed into one large folder, which is what one receives at the National Archives when requesting a pension file.
In the following images you will see the effects of folding, the effects of patrons' examining folders and refiling documents out-of-order, and images of the original envelopes, such as the following 4 pics:
