Lishia Durham Heard said 6/28/2005:

G. W. Greenage was in Dela. until sometime after 1910. He moved his family to Nether Provience township, Dela. County, Penna. down the street from my grandfather, Walter Durham ( his brother-in-law ).

Sometime before 1920 he left his family and went to New Jersey and stayed with a cousin. Eveline Durham Greenage went to Detroit. Her oldest son Raymond stayed with my grandfather and one of her daughters stayed with her sister Lulu Durham Mosely. Raymond Greenage eventually moved to Detroit also. G. W. Greenage ended up in Detroit also but unclear when he went. I can't find him in any Census after 1910. I found Eveline in 1930, name then Bowers, but no George. I checked different spellings as the last name spelling seems interchangeable. I had a death records search done from 1940 to 1945 with no record found. I am now waiting for 1945 to 1950. This information came from 2 of G.W.'s granddaughters and Herbert Pressley, Naomi Greenage's second husband.

And Lishia adds, 26 Nov 2012:

These photos were given to me by Rita, George's grandchild. The caption on the photo with him in uniform states "first black policeman of Dover, Del. He didn't remain one long, left Del. for Pa eventually left his family, lived with a cousin in NJ briefly, then moved to Mich. He worked at various jobs there. Herbert Presley told me George became very ill and moved in with his ex-wife and her husband and they cared for him until he died. There is a family bible floating somewhere in Mich. but everyone I have contacted denies having it. Rita remembers last seeing it with Ann Greenage. Still looking in Elkins Park.

John C. Carter comments about George Washington Greenage, Jul 22, 2012.

GWG's residences:

  • In 1898 he lived in Kent Co, DE and was a farmer (per marriage certificate)
  • In 1900 he lived in Delaware Co, PA and was a laborer (per 1900 census)
  • In 1910 he lived in Kent Co, DE and was a stock horse groomer (per 1910 census)
  • In 1918/19 he lived in Camden and was a: (Not sure what that says … Laber? Government?) (per WWI draft registration).
(He lists his wife Evelyn as “nearest relative,” but gives her address as Wilmington, so they were likely separated).
  • By 1920 he was living in Detroit, MI.
  • In 1948 he was a janitor (per death cert., Detroit, Wayne, MI, which also stated he’d lived in that community for 28 years.

(Can’t seem to find him in the census in either 1920 or 1930. In 1920 he may have been “en route” between Camden and Detroit, but by 1930 he should be showing in Detroit if what’s stated on his death certificate is correct about him being there for 28 years in 1948).

Note: Additionally, there was another George (H.) Greenage/Grinnage who was also born ca. 1878 in Delaware and was living in Philadelphia as of 1930 (occupation: chauffer; industry: garage). But this can’t be George Washington Greenage because he was living in Detroit by then. Also, this Philadelphia George is with a wife named Jennie (from Louisiana) and they had been married for 22 years as of 1930, placing their marriage around 1908 (when George Washington Greenage was still married to Evelyn Durham). Census records show this George & Jennie were still living in Philadelphia in 1940 (he was a garage attendant). Going back, they lived in Delaware Co, PA in 1920 (delivery truck chauffer), and in Chicago, Cook Co, IL in 1910 (railroad brakeman).
