Allen Dean ~1938-1990

1. Obituary:  Allen Dean, 62, of Bridgeton, died Thursday at the Hospital of University of (Pennsylvania), Philadelphia, Pa., following a three month illness.   Born in Bridgeton, he was a lifelong resident.  He was the son of the late Elwood and Helen Reed Dean.

Mr. Dean has worked as a foreman for the Clement Pappas Company in Cedarville for the past 13 years.  Prior to that he held a similar position at the former P.J. Ritter Company in Bridgeton for 33 years.  He was an U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict, stationed in Germany.  In addition he was a member of St. Mary's R.C. Church in Rosenhayn.

Surviving are two brothers, James Dean, Ralph E. Dean Sr., both of Bridgeton; several nieces and nephews.  He is predeceased by a brother William Dean.  Funeral will be held at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137  W. Commerce St., Bridgeton, on Tuesday at noon followed by Mass of Christian Burial and.  Holy Communion at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Rosenhayn at 1 p.m.  Interment will be made in the St. Mary's Cemetery, Rosenhayn. Friends will be received Monday after 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

2.  Death Notice:  DEAN -- Of Bridgeton, N.J., on Thursday, April 12, 1990.  Allen Dean, brother of James Dean and Ralph E. Dean Sr., son of the late Elwood and Helen Reed Dean, aged 62 years.

Benjamin Brady Dean ~1911-1999

Former Pennsville resident Benjamin Brady Dean, 88 of Lakeland, Fla.., and formerly of Pennsville Township died Monday at the home of his son in Lakeland. Born in Bridgeton, he had been a lifelong area resident, living in Pennsville until moving to Lakeland in November.

He worked at DuPont's Carney's Point Works until retiring in 1973 with 37 years of service. An avid golfer, he had been a member of Beckett Golf Club, the DuPont Veterans Association and Ambassador Baptist Church, Pennsville. He most recently attended Christ Memorial Baptist Church, Lakeland.

Surviving are two sons, Thomas L.. of Lakeland and George F. of Phoenix, Ariz..; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. His wife, Caroline B. Horner Dean died in 1997. A son, Clinton B., died in 1994.

Services are 10 a.m. Friday at H.T. Layton & Son Home For Funerals, 102 S. Main St.., Woodstown, where friends may call 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Sharptown Methodist Cemetery, Pilesgrove Township. Memorial contributions may be made to Memorial Fund, Ambassador Baptist Church, 50 Hook Road, Pennsville, NJ 08070

 

 

Charles T. Dean Sr. ~1908-1999

Charles T. Dean Sr. of Denton died Wednesday, June 30, 1999, in his son's home in Marydel. He was 91.  Mr. Dean was born in Ridgely, the son of the late Robert Garey Dean and Maude Rosemond Jones Dean.

He graduated from Ridgely High School and from the University of Maryland, where he received one year of law school. He managed the lacrosse team and was a member of Delta Sigma Phi, while in college.

Mr. Dean was a prominent lifetime farmer.  He was a Sunday school superintendent for 16 years; a member of the Ridgely United Methodist Church; a member of the Caroline County Farm Bureau, where he served as president for five years; a member of the State Farm Bureau, serving three years as vice president; and served on the National Livestock Committee for two years.

Mr. Dean served as president of the PTA of North Caroline High School for one year and as vice president of the Maryland State Congress PTA for two years. He also was president of the Denton Rotary Club, where he was presented with the Paul Harris Fellowship.

He was elected as a Caroline County commissioner, where he served for 12 years, working toward home rule as the government system in Caroline County. He called the first meeting to establish a library in Caroline County. He was chairman of the Bi-racial Committee; was a president of the Caroline County Ditch Association; and served on the Caroline County Draft Board for 16 years.

Mr. Dean was a charter member of the Caroline County Historical Society, where he served as president. He was an area supervisor for ASCS for four years and was responsible for the establishment of the first Parks and Recreation Service in Caroline County.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Dean, who served in the Maryland State Senate for Queen Anne's County for 16 years, and John Dean.  He is survived by four children, Barbara Harrington of Southport, N.C., Charles T. Dean Jr. of Ridgely, Robert Dean of Marydel and Lora Junkin of Arnold; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday in Denton Cemetery.   Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Saturday at Moore Funeral Home, 12 S. Woman's Clothing Consumed By Flames After Explosion of Oil Can Starting Fire

Mrs. Dorcas A. Dean, who was so severely burned at her home on the Gouldtown-Fairton Road, died yesterday afternoon at Bridgeton Hospital, her death being the result of using kerosene in the building of a fire yesterday morning, according to the best information obatainable.

The woman who was fatally burned was admitted to Bridgeton Hospital at 6:35 in the morning, her husband, William F. Dean, and a neighbor taking her there from her home. While her face was not badly burned there were burns over practically her entire body, at points being first degree burns and at other parts second degree burns. It was thought also she inhaled the flames and while the woman was given treatment and her sufferings relieved as much as possible the outcome from the first was regarded as almost sure to be fatal.

The end came at 1:20 yesterday afternoon. In addition to her flesh burns her hair was badly singed, although the ravages of the flames were not so severe about her head and face.

Kerosene Exploded

Mrs. Dean, who was 59 years of age, was building the fire in the kitchen stove in the morning, so far as this paper was able to learn with telephone wires in the neighborhood out of commission, and poured some kerosene on the fuel which in some way ignited and the can in her hand exploded. Her clothing was burned from her body and the flames spread to the house but were brought under control before there was any great amount of damage. There was no call for the Bridgeton Fire Departmen.

Harry A. Dean Sr. ~1922-2004

On June 11, 2004, Harry A. Dean Sr., age 82, passed away at Virtua-West Hospital in Voorhees. A World War II Veteran, and recipient of the Purple Heart. Mr. Dean had been a longtime resident of Haddon Heights where he was a member of the American Legion Post No. 149.

Mr. Dean is lovingly survived by his wife, Eleanor Estelle (nee Hewes); his children, Harry A., Jr. (Kathy) of Pennsauken, Janet of Westmont, Jimmy (Cheri) of Florida, Linda (James) Verna of Deptford, Kenny (Betsy) of Oaklyn, Nancy (Art) Pisko of Deptford and Betty (Steve) Parks of Deptford; his 10 grandchildren and his sister, Betty Kelling.

Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing Monday after 10 AM at the JOHN A. HEALEY FUNERAL HOME, 9 White Horse Pike (at Kings Hwy.), Haddon Heights, where his Religious Service will be held at 12 PM. Interment Locustwood Memorial Park, Cherry Hill. James Dean ~1910-2005

James Dean, 95, a resident of Bridgeton died at his home Monday afternoon. He had been in failing health for the past several years. Born in Cheswold, Delaware, the son of the late Elwood and Helen Reed Dean, he was the husband of Nellie I. Coombs Dean.

Mr. Dean had been a Bridgeton area resident for most of his life and had previously been employed along with his wife at the former DeSantis Dress Company in Bridgeton. He had also worked at Owens Illinois, Martin Dye and Finishing, and at one time was self employed in farming. He was a member of the Nanticoke Lenni Lenape Indians of Bridgeton. \

Besides his wife of 65 years, survivors include one daughter, Diane D. Cuff and her husband Howard of Stow Creek Township, two grandchildren, James David and Toby Howard Cuff, three step grandchildren Matthew, Chelsea, and Hillary Cuff, and one brother Ralph Dean of Hopewell Township, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers Allen and William Dean.

Funeral services will be held on Friday June 3, 2005 from the Sray-Webster Funeral Home, 62 Landis Ave. at Carll's Corner, Upper Deerfield Township at 12 p.m. with the Rev. Robert Valasquez officiating. The interment will take place in the family plot in Gouldtown Memorial Park, Fairfield Twp. Family and friends may call on Friday morning from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Hospice Care of S.J., 2848 S. James H. Dean ~1928-1999

Mr. Dean had been a resident at the HIS Nursing Center in Smyrna. Mr. Dean lived in Philadelphia for many years returning to Smyrna to live in 1993, after retiring from the Philadelphia Intl. Airport as a Sky Cap. He served in the U.S. Army receiving an Honorable discharge in 1946.

2. Obituary: James H. Dean of Integrated Health Services of Delaware at Kent, south of Smyrna, died Wednesday, April 7, 1999, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 70.

Mr. Dean served in the U.S. Army and received an honorable discharge in 1946. He subsequently worked at Philadelphia International Airport as a sky cap, and had retired.

Mr. Dean lived in Philadelphia for many years, and returned to Smyrna to live in 1993.

He is survived by his wife, Dorinda M. Shelton Dean of Smyrna; a daughter, Vivian Harris of Dover; a stepson, Derrick Morris of Smyrna; a stepdaughter, Conchita Congo of Las Vegas; a sister, Marguerite Watson of Smyrna; a nephew, Larry Watson of Smyrna; and a niece, Janice Frazier of Smyrna.

Laura M. Goff Dean ~1915-1995

1.  Obituary:  Retired chef  Laura M. Dean, 80, of 449 Oakview Heights, Bridgeton died Thursday at her late residence. Mrs. Dean was born in Fairton, the daughter of he late Howard and Emily Gould Goff. The wife of the late William Dean, she had lived at her present address since 1986 and had been a resident of Bridgeton for most of her life.

She was a chef by trade and prior to her retirement in 1972 she had been employed with the Rainbow Convalescent Center and prior to that with Cumberland Manor.   She enjoyed cooking as a hobby.

Survivors include William W. Dean, Quinton; a daughter, Ruth A. Velazquez of Fairton; a sister, Josephine Pierce of Bridgeton; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.  She was predeceased by a brother, William Goff, and a sister, Mildred Miller.

Graveside funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Fernwood Memorial Park, Shiloh Pike, Hopewell Township, with the Revs. Jennie Clark and Margaret Mary Staller of Cumberland County Hospice officiating.  Interment will follow the services.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Cumberland County Hospice, 2848 S. Madge Carney Dean 1887-1966

Obituary:
Madge Dean, widow of Ralph Dean and daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Carney was born in Cheswold, Delaware August 16, 1887 and departed this life Aug 31, 1966. Mrs. Dean lived on the Gouldtown-Fairton Road until her husband's death in 1949. Since that time she lived with relatives.

Many years were spent in the home of Mrs. Helen Saunders. The last months of her life were spent with Mrs. Anna Thompson, her niece on the Sea Breeze Road.

She was a member of the St. John Methodist Church, Fordville, for many years. A few months prior to her death she was recipient of an award certificate presented to all members having served the church for 25 years or more. She was active in attendance until she moved in another area, but always loving to sing the hymns of the church and enjoyed the fellowship with God's people.

There were no children born to her but she was a mother to many. A loving friend, a kind person and one who was nice to know.

Survivors are: one sister, Mrs. Ella Clark; three brothers, Joseph, Robert, and Dawson Carney, all of Cheswold, Delaware; and many other relatives and friends. a helpful friend, a loving person and a patient sufferer. Known by many as Aunt Madge.

Services: St. John Methodist Church, Fordville Road, Fordville. The Lively Funeral Home. No interment information.

 

Morgan Dean 1907-1983

Morgan Dean, son of the late Ervin and Annie Dean, was born September 15, 190? near Dover. We lovingly gave him to Jesus when he entered into rest on Sunday, August 7, 1883 in Kent General Hospital at 6:45 a.m., at the age of 75.

He was married to Corinne Durham, June 24, 1939. He was a loving devoted husband. They shared their lives together for more than 44 years. Even though

God did not bless them with children, they were honored with four wonderful children and one granddaughter.

He was baptized into the SDA faith in Silver Lake in Dover in September’ 1943. He was a faithful and devoted member of Forest Grove SDA Church where he served as local elder, trustee, and member of the building and maintenance committee until his death. Previously, he served as a SS Superintendent, SS teacher and Young People‘s leader. He loved his church and supported all related activities until his health failed him. He loved everyone and everything connected with the church.

He was also greatly concerned and interested in the members of his community. His loving, winning personality made lots of friends and always helped anyone he could no matter what, when or where.

He was a dedicated laborer at any task he pursued. He worked at a variety of jobs, but was especially fond of gardening. He was employed as chauffeur and gardener for Mr. and Mrs. Edmond DuPont in Wilmington, Delaware for about 18 1/2 years. After his retirement he continued with lawn care in the local area.

His health began to fail a few years ago, but being a patient sufferer he never complained. He knew God was with him, so he bore his affliction as Job waiting on the Lord.

In addition to his widow Corinne, he is survived by his sister, Sara Lundy of New York City, two stepsisters, Mildred Barton of Dover and Maxie Mosley of Bridgeton, New Jersey, four Godchildren, Lloyd Watson of California, Karen Catanzaro of Edison, New Jersey, Shari Coker of Wilmington and Seth Coker of Newark, and one precious granddaughter, Nina Catanzaro, who was born on his birthday and whom he simply adored, and a host of friends.

Nellie Lorraine Dean 1923-2000

Nellie Lorraine Dean of Goldsboro died of a terminal illness Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, in Talbot Hospice House, Easton. She was 76. Mrs. Dean was born Nov. 18, 1923, in Ridgely, the daughter of the late Marshall and Emma Correll Griffin.

She graduated in 1940 from Loockerman High School. She was a homemaker and a loving and devoted wife and mother. Mrs. Dean was a member of Replanted Zion United Methodist Church, where she served on the building and program committees. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women Organization.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, William Dean, on July 15, 1998, two sons, Vaughn Griffin and Andre Dean; four brothers; and a sister. She is survived by two sons, Maurice Dean of Goldsboro and Bruce Dean of Bear, Del.; two daughters, Gaynelle Bledsoe of Forestville and Maureen Dean-Huggard of Denton; a son-in-law, Ray Bledsoe of Forestville; a sister, Odella Murray of New Jersey; two brothers, Carroll Griffin of Denton and Gerald Griffin of Baltimore; four sisters-in-law, Ruth Washington and Gladys Dean, both of Goldsboro, Edna Griffin of Baltimore and Shirley Griffin of Dover, Del.; 16 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and close friends.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Fleegle-Helfenbein Funeral Home, P.A. in Greensboro. Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Replanted Zion United Methodist Church in Ridgely. Paul Dean ~1927-2001

Paul Dean of Lincoln, formerly of Folsom, N.J., died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, in his home. He was 74.

Mr. Dean was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Before retiring in 1992 and moving to Delaware, Mr. Dean was a supervisor for Harrahs Casino, Atlantic City, N.J., for 15 years. Prior to his employment there, he worked 15 years as a credit manager for American Consumer Industries, Philadelphia. Mr. Dean was a member of the Christian Tabernacle, Lincoln, a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a member of the local chapter of the VFW in Atco, N.J.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Margaret L. Dean; a son, Paul T. Dean of New Market, Va.; two daughters; Paulette A. Sheward of Clementon, N.J., and Diane V. Miller of Turnersville, N.J.; a sister, Alma Hinman of Asheville, N.C.; and two granddaughters.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Christian Tabernacle, Johnson Street Extension, Lincoln. Burial will be private. Robert Dean ~1902-1992

1. Obituary: Robert Dean, 90, of RD 7, Box 144, Woodruff-Carmel Road, Upper Deerfield Township, died Friday afternoon at his home after being in failing health five years.  Born in Bridgeton, he was the son of the late William and Darkis Dean, and the husband of the late Carrie (Coombs) Dean.

Prior to his retirement in 1969, he was employed by Woodruff Oil Company for 28 years.

He is survived by two sons, Theodore of Upper Deerfield Township and Raphael of Canyon County, Calif.; two sisters, Emma Pierce of Bridgeton and Lee Ann Peterson of the Cumberland County Medical Center; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Mr. Dean was a member of the Centerton Freewill Baptist Church.  His pastor, the Rev.  Paul D. Sprouse, will conduct the services 10 a.m. Wednesday from the Sray Funeral Home, Carlls Comer.  Interment will be in the family plot at Fernwood Memorial Park, Bridgeton. Friends will be received 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Virginia L. Dean ~1920-1999

Virginia L. Dean of Harrington died Friday, April 23, 1999, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital, Milford. She was 79. Mrs. Dean and her husband were farmers in the Harrington area for 41 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Dean in 1992; a sister, Delema Shockley and a brother, Dr. James Edward Legates.

She is survived by a daughter, Bonnie Morris and her husband, Wayne of Harrington; a brother, Russell Legates of Harrington and a grandson, Darrin Morris of Orlando, Fla.

William Dean ~1911-1983

1. Obituary:  William Dean aged, 72, of RR 8, Box 52, Bridgeton Ave., died Friday afternoon.  He had been in failing health two years and seriously ill the past month.  Mr. Dean was born in Dover, Del., the son of the late Elwood and Helen Reed Dean and was the husband of Laura Miller Dean.  He had resided at his present address the past ten years: prior to that he had been a Bridgeton resident for many years.  Mr. Dean retired from Owens-Illinois Glass Company in 1973 after 45 years of service and was a member the quarter-century club.

Surviving besides his wife are one son, William W. Dean of R.D. 2, Salem; one daughter, Ruth Ann Velazquez, of Bridgeton; three brothers, James, Ralph and Allen Dean, all of Bridgeton;  nine grandchildren;  one great-grandchild;  and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services and interment will be private at the convenience of the family from the Russell C. Sheppard Funeral Home.  Friends may call on Monday evening between 7 and 8 o'clock.

2. Death Notice:  DEAN -- Of RR 8,  Box 52,  Bridgeton Avenue, Bridgeton, N.J., on Friday,  August 5, 1983.  William, husband of Laura (nee Miller) Dean, father of William W. Dean and Ruth Ann Velazquez, aged 72 years.

William Frank Dean ~1864-1938

The funeral of William F. Dean, who died in Deerfield Township. Friday, has been set for the next Monday afternoon with services in the Fordville M.E. Church and burial in Gouldtown Cemetery. The deceased was 74 years of age.

 

William Solomon Dean ~1921-1998

William Solomon Dean of Goldsboro died Wednesday, July 15, 1998, in his home. He was 77. Mr. Dean was born in 1921, in Goldsboro, the son of the late Calvin Wilson and Beatrice Gross Dean. He graduated from Lockerman High School, Denton.

Mr. Dean was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was employed by Dover Air Force Base as a heavy equipment operator, retiring after 25 years of service.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles Dean, Herbert Dean and Calvin ''Bus'' Dean. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Nellie Lorraine Griffin Dean; two sons, Maurice William Dean of Goldsboro and Bruce Herbert Dean of Bear, Del.; two daughters, Gaynelle Bledsoe of Forrestville, and Maureen Dean Huggard of Goldsboro; a sister, Ruth Washington of Goldsboro; an aunt, Bartie McKnight of Ridgely; 18 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.

Service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Lockerman (Groce's Chapel) Church, Goldsboro. Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Fleegle & Helfenbein Funeral Home, Goldsboro. Burial will be in Eastern Shore Veterans' Cemetery, Hurlock.
