V. Hughes, 77, of near Cheswold, died of pneumonia Friday in Kent General
Hospital.
Her
husband, Percy, Sr., died in 1955. She is survived by three stepsons, Nathan,
Percy Jr. and James, all of Bridgeton, N.J.; a step-daughter, Bertha Gould of
Bridgeton; a brother, Hershel Wright of Millsboro; and a sister, Reba Wright of
Millsboro.
Services
will be Tuesday at the Torbert Funeral Home, Reed and Bradford streets, Dover;
Burial will be in Immanuel Church Cemetery.

Obituary:
Alfonso R. “Phonsie” Hughes, 78, of Vineland died Tuesday in the Jersey
Memorial Home in Vineland where he had been a patient for 2½ years.
Born
in Philadelphia and raised in Bridgeton, the son of the late Alfonso “Allie” and
Dora Pierce Hughes, he was a member of the Class of 1936 at Bridgeton High School.
He retired
after 22 years of service with Armstrong/Foster Forbes in Millville. He also had
been a manager for the former Gorson and McCormick Fruit and Produce Co., Bridgeton,
and worked for Chrysler Motors in Newark, Del. He
was a decorated Army veteran of World War II in Europe and was a sergeant. He
was one of the few witnesses to the hanging of Mussolini. He was a member
of Shoemaker American Legion Post 95, Bridgeton, and the Theodore Roosevelt American
Legion Post 4 in Vineland. He was active in Bridgeton’s Italian second ward district
and held an honorary membership in the Italian Civic Social Club. He was a 1997
inductee into the Bridgeton Hall of Fame. He
was selected to umpire the 1962 Babe Ruth World Series held in Bridgeton. He was
member and past secretary and past president of the Garden State Umpire Association.
He was an umpire in the South Jersey and Cumberland sandlot and softball leagues.
He was selected this week to receive the Sportsman’s Corner Award in Bridgeton
for his dedication to athletics.
Surviving
are his wife, Elmira E. (nee Durham); a daughter, Michelle Hanby at home;
a sister, Dorothy Upshure of Wilmington, Del.; and a brother, Rod of Vineland.
Private
services will be Friday in St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Bridgeton. Friends may

services for Alvin S. Hughes Jr., 79, of Dover were held Friday, May 28,
at Trader Funeral Home, Dover. Mr. Hughes died Monday, May 24, 2004, at Bayhealth-Kent
General Hospital, Dover. Mr. Hughes was born May 5, 1925, in Edwardsville, son
of the late Alvin Sr. and Mabel Kemp Hughes.
After
serving in the U.S. Army, he worked as a custodian in the Caesar Rodney School
District. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed time with his brothers and friends.
Mr. Hughes was a member of Lebanon Wesleyan Church.
He
is survived by two brothers and a sister-in-law, Willard and Josette Hughes of
Dover and Eugene Hughes of Sandtown; six sisters, Amy Oechesler and Eva Dill,
both of Wyoming, Dorothy Hughes of Wilmington, Pauline Tatman of Harrington, Lorretta
Poore of Dover and France Hurd of Wyoming; and his caregivers, Mike and Margie
Harmon and Martha Scott, all of Dover.

Charles
W. Hughes, age 73, of Hopewell Township, died Friday morning at his home.
He had been in declining health for the past year. Born in Pudeka, Ky., he was
the son of the late Charles and Clara Harris Hughes and was the husband of Helen
Saunders Hughes. He had been a Hopewell Twp. resident for 30 years and prior to
that had resided in Salem.
Before
his retirement in 1993, Mr. Hughes had been employed with the Chrysler Corp. in
Newark, Delaware for 25 years. Previous to that he had worked at Anchor Hocking
Glass Company in Salem. Mr. Hughes was a member of the Salem Congregation of Jehovah's
Witnesses.
In
addition to his wife, survivors include five daughters, Theada Shaw of California,
Renea Kinder of Rosenhayn, Kim Ford of California, Toni Slaughter of Salem and
Crystal Pierce of Hopewell Twp.; one son, William Derick of Upper Deerfield Twp.,
9 grandchildren including his eldest granddaughter, Veronica Pierce of Deerfield
Twp. and 11 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Edward Hughes and
a granddaughter Felicia Shaw.
Services
will be held on Thursday, July 5th at noon, at the Salem Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's
Witnesses, 152 York Street, Salem. Burial was private at the convenience of the
family. Arrangements are under the direction of the Padgett Funeral Home, Upper
Deerfield Township.

Clifford
S. Hughes, 74, of RD 7, Reeves Rd., died in Bridgeton Hospital early this
morning after a 10-month illness. He had been hospitalized three days. Born in
Salem, Mr. Hughes had lived in this area 26 years. He worked for Sheppard Farms
in Cedarville for many yeas and his last employment was with the Aberfoyle plant
in Bridgeton. He was an active member of St. John United Methodist Church of Fordville
until his illness.
Survivors
are his wife, Mary; two daughters, Mrs. Sarah Saunders and Mrs. Margaret Green,
both of Bridgeton; four sons, Horace, Bridgeton, Benjamin, Fairton, and Herbert
and Howard, both with the U.S. Army at Fort Dix, and also one brother, John Hughes.
There are 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren in addition to other relatives.
Funeral
services will be held Monday from the Lively Funeral Home. Burial will be in Fordville
Memorial Park.

P. Pierce Hughes, age 85 of Millville, passed away Friday evening, November 17, 2006
at the South Jersey
Healthcare Regional
Medical Center,
Vineland.
Born in Fairfield Township,
she lived in Seabrook and Woodstown for 25 years, before moving to Millville
in 1990.
She was a housewife and worked as a cook for the Park and Eat Restaurant
in Swedesboro for 15 years. She was a member of the Chestnut Assembly
of God Church of Vineland. She enjoyed sightseeing, reading, listening
to Gospel music and playing Bingo.
She is survived by five daughters, Emily Wilson of Millville, Wanda Johnson
of Pennsgrove, Anna Mary Echevarria and Tina Hughes of Vineland, and Rita
Johnson of Florida; two sons, Bob Hughes of Delaware, and Irving Hughes
of Pennsylvania; two brothers, Carl Pierce and Gillton Pierce; three sisters,
Elizabeth Edward, Emily Loatman, and Liza Coombs, all of Bridgeton; 14
grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her
husband Robert R. Hughes in 2003; one son Tony Hughes; one brother Charles
Pierce; and three sisters, Mary Mosley, Madge Durham, and Ernestine Coombs.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 21,

Ernest
Roland ''Pop Pop'' Hughes died of heart failure Saturday, May 2, 1998, in
Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. He was 95. Mr. Hughes was born in
Cambridge, Md., son of the late Charles H. and Mamie Slacum Hughes. He worked
as carpenter for DuPont Co., retiring in 1965 after 22 years of service.
He was
preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Hannah Bell Bradford Hughes in 1990.
He is survived by two daughters, Marion H. Merrill and her husband Richard of
Seaford, Victoria A. Thompson and her husband Alfred of Seaford; a grandson,
Stephen R. Brock and his wife Sandy of Seaford.
Service
will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Watson-Yates Funeral Home, Front and King streets,
Seaford, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Chaplain
Richard L. Drummond will officiate. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Seaford.

Marie Hughes of Dover died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005, in her home. She was 92.
Mrs. Hughes was born Oct. 9, 1912, in Cheswold, daughter of the late George W.
and Sally Belle Corney Carter.
She
loved dancing, cooking for her family and taking care of her grandchildren. Mrs.
Hughes was a member of the Immanuel United Methodist Church in Cheswold.
In
addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Hughes;
a son, Larry D. Hughes; and a daughter, Marjorie Mosley. She is survived by two
sons, Zahn Hughes and John Homer Hughes, both of Dover; four daughters and two
sons-in-law, Esther Glendora Sammons and Anna and William Newman, all of Dover,
Edith Pierce of Bridgeton, N.J. and Charlotte and John Gaines of Cheswold; 28
grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral
services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in Torbert Funeral Chapel, 61 S. Bradford St.,
Dover, where friends may call one hour earlier. Burial will be in Immanuel United
Methodist Church Cemetery, Cheswold.

Beckett Hughes
Freda
(Beckett) Hughes, 86, of 12 N. Boyd St., Cape May Court House, formerly of
Bridgeton, died Wednesday afternoon in Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital, Cape
May Court House, where she was a patient for three
weeks after being in declining health two years.
Born
in and a lifelong resident of Bridgeton, having resided on Coral Avenue for 50
years, she moved 23 years ago to make her home with her son, the Rev. H. Raymond
Hughes.
A
homemaker most of her life, she worked in her younger years at the former American
Store and also for Lang’s florist in Bridgeton. She was an active member
of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, teaching Sunday school and joining
the church choir, as well as being a Circle Leader. She also was a member
of the church’s administrative board and belonged to the Pastor Parish and missions
committee.
In
addition to her son, she is survived by a daughter, Betty J. Bates of Fairton;
six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Myrtle Hoffstetter of Shiloh;
and two brothers, Melvin Beckett of Bridgeton and Arnold Beckett of Hopewell Township.
She was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Beckett.
Services
will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, 424 N.
Pearl St., Bridgeton, with the Rev. Wilbert L. Frazer and the Rev. Jay Amey sharing
the services. Interment will be in Laurel Lawn Cemetery, Bridgeton.
Friends will be received 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at the church.
Contributions may be made to the Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church.

Obituary: Irving F. “Jim” Hughes Sr., 68, of RD 4, Lummistown Road
died unexpectedly Thursday morning in Bridgeton Hospital where he was taken after
suffering a heart attack at his home. He had been in declining health 11 years.
Born
in Bridgeton, the son of the late Percy and Adella Pierce Hughes, he was the husband
of Marion Reed Hughes. A lifetime resident of the Fairton area, he had resided
at his present address 25 years. Mr. Hughes worked as an equipment operator
at the former Seabrook Farms Co. for 20 years and later took up employment with
Dix Brothers Farms until declining health forced him to retire.
In
addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Irving F. “Jimmy” Hughes Jr. of
Fairton; a daughter, Kathleen A. Hughes of Bridgeton; two brothers, Percy Hughes
Jr. of Newport and Robert Hughes of Penns Grove; a sister, Bertha Gould of Bridgeton;
and eight grandchildren. He was predeceased by two brothers, Harold and
Nathan Hughes.

"Rod" Hughes, age 78 of Vineland died unexpectedly on Friday,
January 23, 2004. He had been in declining health for the past two years.
Born in Philadelphia, the son of the late Alphonso and Dora Pierce Hughes
he was the husband of Patricia Mosley Hughes. He had been a Vineland resident
for 44 years and prior to that had resided in Bridgeton.
Before his retirement he had been employed as a truck driver with the
Tredway Express Company of Hightstown for 44 years. Mr. Hughes was a graduate
of the Bridgeton High School Class of 1943.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, H. Elayne Sama
of Vineland and Patricia Anne Eschbach and her husband David of Lancaster,
Pa.; three sons, Benjamin Leroy Coker, Jr., Terry John Coker and his wife
Carol and Jerry Wayne Coker Sr., all of Vineland; two nieces, Judith Upshur
of New Castle, Del. and Michelle Hughes of Millville and 9 grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Peter A.L. Hughes, a sister, Dorothy Upshur
and a brother, Alphonso Romain Hughes.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 29th at 11:00 am at
St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 186 East Commerce St., Bridgeton.
Burial will take place at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Cedarville.

R. Hughes Jr. of Dover passed away Tuesday evening, March 20, 2007,
in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover, after having been in failing
health the past several months. He was 72. Mr. Hughes was born in Fairfield
Township, N.J., son of the late John R. "Romie" Sr. and Ariana
(Gould) Hughes.
He
was a 1955 graduate of Bridgeton (N.J.) High School, where he played football.
Mr. Hughes and his wife had previously been residents of Fairfield Township,
and had lived in the Dover area for the past five years. He was formerly
employed with T-FAL in Millville, N.J., as a forklift operator, and had
previously worked at Ecko products in Clayton, N.J. In his younger years,
he was employed with Martin Dye Corp. and also with Seabrook Farms as
security. Mr.
Hughes was an avid ham radio operator and was a member of the Vineland
Repeaters Group and the Cumberland Radio Club. His call sign was K2UJU.
He
is survived by his wife, Margaret L. "Peggy" (Pierce) Hughes;
and two sisters and a brother-in-law, Eleanor Thompson of Atlanta, and
Rachel and Wayne Green of Fairfield Township, all of whom will cherish
his memory.
Funeral
services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Burial

C. Hughes, wife of the late John C. Hughes, a long time employee of the City
Water Department, passed away Tuesday evening at her residence on the Reeves road.
She had been a resident of this community for a number of years.
Surviving
are four daughters, Mrs. Eunice Pierce, of Gloucester; Mrs. Ethel Mann, Bridgeton;
Mrs. Emmaline Young, Salem; and Naomi N. Giles, at home; and three sons, Irving
Coombs and Percy and John Romaine Hughes, of this city.

F. Hughes, 60, of Fairfield Township died Tuesday in the Veterans Hospital
in Wilmington, Del. The son of the late Percy and Adella Pierce Hughes,
she was born in Deerfield Township and had been a resident of Fairfield
Township for many years.
He
was employed by Thompson Instruction Co. and was a veteran of World War II.
He is
survived by his wife Ineza Neal Hughes, four daughters, Bar----- Whyte of
Bridgeton, Dot Pierce of Vineland, and Adella and Ethel Hughes, both of Fairfield
Township; four sons, James Whyte of Springfield, Mass., Joseph Whyte and David
Hughes, both of Bridgeton
and Eddie Hughes of Fairfield Township; four brothers, Percy, Harold, Jim and
Robert Hughes; a sister, Bertha Gould and eight grandchildren.

R. Hughes, age 86 of Millville, died Tuesday morning in Bishop McCarthy Residence,
Vineland after an extended illness.
Born and raised in Bridgeton, he lived
in Woodstown most of his life and recently moved to Millville.
He worked
for Agway of Woodstown as a truck driver for 25 years until his retirement. Prior
to that, he worked as a farmer for 20 years. He enjoyed working on cars and sightseeing.
He is survived by his wife Doris (Pierce); two sons, Bob of New Jersey,
and Irving of Pennsylvania; five daughters, Emily Wilson of Millville, Wanda Johnson
of Pennsgrove, Tina Hughes and Anna Mary Echevarria both of Vineland, and Rita
Johnson of Ohio; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased
by a son Tony.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 7 p.m. in

M. Hughes, Jr. 1944-2006
William
M. Hughes, Jr., 62, of Millville, died sudden and unexpectedly on
Wednesday, April 5, 2006 at his home. Born in Bridgeton, NJ on Jun. 11,
1944, he was the son of the late William M. and Frances (nee Chandler)
Hughes, and the husband of Beverly (nee Miller) Hughes. Mr. Hughes had
been a Millville resident for the past 60 years.
Mr. Hughes was employed as a driver for UPS for 16 years and worked for
Shop Rite of Vineland for 10 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army
serving during the Vietnam era, and an avid collector of die cast model
cars. He also enjoyed photography.
Besides his wife he is survived by his daughter, Natalie Dawn Montgomery
and her husband Christian, of Mays Landing, and his sister, Janet Periconi
and her husband John of Vineland, and several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to attend a time of reflection and memorial
service at the funeral home on Tuesday, April 11, 2006 at 7:00 PM. Interment
will take place at the convenience of the family.
