Donnie J. Dagostino  1967-2007

Donnie J. Dagostino, 40, of Laurel Lake, died suddenly and unexpectedly Thursday, Dec. 20, 2007 at his residence. Born in Bridgeton on Feb. 20, 1967, he was the son of Benjamin Dagostino and Beverly Diana (nee Smith) Banfield.

Donnie attended the Bridgeton Public School Systems and was formerly employed with Easter Seals of New Jersey in Millville before his health started to fail. He loved to work with computers and he also enjoyed Freestyle Club Music. When he was younger, he enjoyed skating.

Surviving him are his father, Benjamin Dagostino, of Fairton; his mother and stepfather, Beverly Diana and Robert Banfield, of Laurel Lake; two sisters, Bonnie Barker and Michelle Schavelin, both of Fairton; and several relatives and friends.   He was predeceased by one brother, Philip Dagostino.

Family and friends are invited to attend funeral services on Thursday, Dec. 27, at 11 a.m. at the Sray-Webster Funeral Home, 62 Landis Ave., at Carll¹s Corner, Upper Deerfield Township The Rev. Paul D. Sprouse will conduct funeral services. The interment will be in Centerton Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery, in Centerton. Relatives and friends serving as pallbearers are Robert Banfield, Steven Schavelin, Ronnie Clifford, Anthony Bonualas, Anthony Ridgway and Gary Ridgway.   Friends may call on Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home prior to the services. Alfred Daniels 1902-1999

Alfred Daniels of Dover died of cardiac arrest Tuesday, July 13, 1999, in Bay Health Medical Center, Dover. He was 97.  Mr. Daniels was born on March 7, 1902, in Clayton. He was raised by Mr. Will and Ella Loper.

He had been a retired truck driver. In his younger years he drove a chicken truck from Delaware to New York, and later drove a truck for a concrete pipe company of Bear for more than 25 years.  After retiring, he did yard work for several people in the Dover area. Mr. Daniels loved sitting on his porch talking to his many friends and neighbors. He was affectionately called ''Al'' or ''Al Loper.''

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Daniels; his daughter, Lydia Daniels; and his uncle, Isaac Daniels.   He is survived by six daughters, Grace Hansley, Blanch Brown, Margaret Demby, Barbara Daniels and Frances Short, all of Dover, and Corrine Simms of Pemberton, N.J.; two sons, Isaac Daniels of Pleasantville, N.J., and Alfred Daniels, Jr. of Pennsauken, N.J.; four sons-in-law, Stanford Hansley, James Brown, and Charles Demby, all off Dover, and James Simms of Pemberton; a daughter-in-law, Ivy Daniels of Pennsauken; a loving cousin, Marie H. Daniels; 19 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren and many friends.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Zion AME Church, Queen Street and Fulton Street in Dover, where friends may call one hour prior to service.  Burial will be in Whatcoat Cemetery, Dover.  Arrangements by Bennie Smith Funeral Home.  

 

Helen Juanita Johnson Day 1921-2003

Helen Juanita Johnson Day of Lewes died Friday, Feb 7, 2003, in Christiana Hospital of Christiana Care, Newark. She was 81. Mrs. Day was born Dec. 9, 1921, in the Lewes area, daughter of the late Rosa Mae Morris and George B. Johnson.

She was a home-care provider for homebound geriatric patients in the Lewes and Rehoboth Beach area. Mrs. Day was a member of the Nanticoke Indian Association of Oak Orchard, near Millsboro.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Melchia B. Day. She is survived by two daughters, Lida V. "Jimmy" Seymour of Wilmington and Rosa Lee "Patty" Johnson of Greenville, S.C.; two sisters, Sarah Patsy Harmon and Gladys Street, both of Lewes; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Israel United Methodist Church, Plantation Road, Lewes. Services will be noon Saturday in the church, where friends also may call two hours earlier. The Rev. Timothy A. Duffield Sr. will officiate. Burial will be in Christ's Church Cemetery, Harbeson. Arrangements by Miller Funeral Service, Milford.

 

William Robert Denby 1926-2007

William R. Denby 82, was born October 22, 1926 in Bridgeton, N.J. to the late Joseph and Ethel (Pierce) Denby. He departed this life on November 27, 2007 at the S.J. Regional Medical Center to go home to be with the Lord.

William attended school in Quinton Township, of Cumberland County. He also served our country in the United States Army during World War II. He received a WWII Victory Medal and an Army of Occupational Medal in Japan and was honorably discharged in 1947. William was employed by the Local #30 Roofers Union and he retired after twenty years of service. He enjoyed fishing, making people laugh by telling jokes or sharing his life stories. He was married and had two children from this union one son William "Butch" Denby, and a daughter Lillian Denby. He married his sweetheart of thirty eight years Gertrude W. Smith on March 4, 2006. He attended Living Manna Ministries International Inc. since 1993. He faithfully came to hear the Word of God taught and preached by Dr. Yvonne McKnight. Who since became his Pastor. In 2002 while a patient in the Veteran¹s Hospital of De., William received Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. In the same year he received the baptism of the Holy Spirit and became a member of Living Manna Ministries International Inc.

In addition to his children William leaves to cherish his memories his loving and devoted Wife Gertrude W. Denby, one sister Mary Wright, eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. William was preceded in death by three sisters Essie Harris, Martha Stewart, and Julia Green, five brothers Charles Brown, Elmer Brown, and Joseph Denby Jr., David Denby, and Walter Denby.

Services will be held Monday, December 3, 2007 at the Living Manna Ministries International Inc. 25 South East Ave, Vineland, N.J. at 11 am where friends may view 2 hours prior to services. Interment will be held at the Cumberland Co. Veterans Cemetery, Hopewell Township, N.J. immediately following services. Kathryn Elizabeth Dixon, born on September 5, 1929, daughter of Millard Mosley, Sr. and the late Anna E. Mosley, departed this life Monday, April 16, 1990 at Milford Memorial Hospital, Milford, Delaware after a long illness.

Kathryn was born in Milford, Delaware and raised in Frederica, Delaware. She attended local schools there, Booker T. Washington, and Delaware State College (High School) in Dover, Delaware.

Kathryn was employed for 11 years in housekeeping at Dover Air Force Base and later worked 15 years in the same capacity at the Delaware Home and Hospital For The Chronically Ill in Smyrna, Delaware.

She was a past member of Local Chapter #936 of AFSME (American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employee’s Union) and served as its Treasurer for 4½ years. She also loved baseball and attended gJames whenever she could.

She leaves to mourn her death two daughters, Joyce Dixon of Wilmington, and Joan Ellerbe of Dover; her father, Millard Mosley, Sr. of Felton; her brother, Millard Mosley, Jr. of Felton; a son-in-law, William J. Ellerbe, Sr.; two grandchildren, Erica J., and William J. Ellerbe, Jr., and a host of other relatives and friends.

Fredrick Douglas (1889-1974)

Fredrick S. Douglas, 84, of RD 7, Shoemaker Lane, died Friday in the Bridgeton Nursing Home, following a long illness. He was born in Salem County, the son of the late Joshua and Alice Douglas.  The husband of the late Hannah Pierce Douglas, he was a retired carpenter.

Surviving are one son, Albert Douglas, at home; two daughters, Clara Gould, Bridgeton, and Alice Loatman, RD 7; one brother Edwin Gibson, Woodbury; 14 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 1 o’clock from Mount Vernon Holiness Church, Bridgeton-Salem Pike at Halfway House.  Friends may call after 11am Wednesday, the Rev. Matthew Brown will officiate.

 

Hannah Douglas (1891-1966)

Mrs. Hannah Pierce Douglas, 74, of RD 7, died in Bridgeton Hospital after a lengthy illness. Born in Salem County, she was the daughter of the late Enoch and Eliza Pierce.

Surviving are her husband, Fred Douglas; two daughters, Mrs. Clara Gould and Mrs. James Loatman, and a son, Albert Douglas; 14 grandchildren, five great - grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Clara Bose of Philadelphia and Mrs. Elsie Viole of Bridgeton; also several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2pm from the Wesley Funeral Home, 17 South Burlington Avenue.

The eulogy will be given by the Rev. William Johnson of the Bethany Christian Church.  Friends may call Thursday evening from 7 to 8.  Interment will be in the Gouldtown Cemetery.

 

Clara Beatrice Wright 'Speedy' Downes ~1939-2001

Clara Beatrice Wright "Speedy" Downes of Millington died after a short illness Saturday, July 21, 2001, in Kent and Queen Anne's Hospital in Chestertown. She was 62. Mrs. Downes was born in Wilmington, Del., daughter of the late Raymond Wright Sr. and Lucy Wright-Gale.

She received her education in Kent County public schools. After high school, she went to work for Campbell Soup Co., where she was employed for 30 years. After retiring from Campbell Soup she went to work at Heron Point. Mrs. Downes had taken on the task of caring for her younger sister, Romona Gale, and her two children, Kaniya Jeff and Laron Jeff, to whom she became a mother. She was very fond of and devoted to these children.

She enjoyed gardening and flowers and always provided for others in their times of need.

Mrs. Downes was a member of Graves Chapel U.A.M.E Church, where she served as an usher. At an early age under the Rev. John E. Harris, she gave her life to Christ, but in her later age she rededicated her life to Christ. Her favorite scripture was Psalm 27 and her favorite hymn was "I Love To Praise Him " and "It's Me Oh Lord."

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepfather, William Gale; her twin children; a sister, Yvonne Downing; and a brother, Edward "Ghost" Wright.

She is survived by five sisters, Gladys Wilkerson of Millington, Lucy Wright-Johnson and Alice Mae Gibbs, both of Wilmington, Del., Rev. Joyce Ann Phillips and Romona Gale, both of Millington; three brothers, Raymond Wright Jr. of Wilmington, Calvin Gale of Rex, Ga., and Michael Gale of Centreville; three stepbrothers, William Gale Jr. of Newark, N.J., Preston Gale of Wilmington and Carl Gale of New Castle, Del.; three stepsisters, Clara Gale and Margaret Gale, both of Wilmington, and Grace Gale of Boston; four godchildren, Dwayne Phillips, Amber Jones, Tonya Wright and Donnisa Hinson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many beloved friends.

Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Graves Chapel U.A.M.E. Church, Millington. Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at the church, where friends may also call two hours earlier. Dorothy Downs 1902-1997

Dorothy Downs was born in Media, Pennsylvania on September 1, 1902. She was the third of eight children born to the late George and Evelyn Greenage. She attended school in Dover, Delaware where she met her husband, Raymond Thompson. They moved to Chester County, Pennsylvania where three children were born from this union. They resided in Yeadon and Darby, Pennsylvania until the death of her husband in 1944.

In 1953, Dorothy married Oscar Downs and moved to Philadelphia where she resided for thirty-four years. She was a member of the Greater St. Matthews Church and the Maryland Club. Oscar preceded her in death in 1969.

Because of her frail health, she moved to Michigan in 1987 to be near her daughter. On June 27, 1997 she died from congestive heart failure at the Charter House Convalescent Center of Farmington Hills where she had resided for the past three years.

She is survived by her daughter, Rita T. Drew; son-in-law, John E. Drew of West Bloomfield, Michigan; daughter-in-law, Florine Thompson of Yeadon, Pennsylvania; two brothers-in-law: Kermit Downs and Herbert Pressley of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; three grandchildren: Sharon Sampson of Anchorage, Alaska, Charles Davis III of Detroit, Michigan and Raymond Charles Thompson of Yeadon, Pennsylvania; five great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

 

Cora E. Draine ~1905-1983

Cora E. Draine of 123 Engle St., Chester, Pa., died Thursday, Oct. 27, 1983, at Crozer Chester Medical Center of respiratory failure. She was 78. Her husband, Salomon, died in l963. Mrs. Draine was a member of Forest Grove Seventh Day Adventist Church, Dover.

She is survived by three sons, Donald Draine, Wilmington, Gordon Draine, Philadelphia, Pa., Gerald Draine, Chester, Pa., three daughters, Janice Draine, East Windsor, Conn., Geraldine Jology, Chester, Pa., Brenda Mickniewicz, Clearwater, Fla; one brother, Franklin Sammons, Bridgeton, N.J., numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Monday at Forest Grove Seventh Day Adventist Church, Dover.

Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery. Arrangements made by Torbert Funeral Chapel, Dover.

Donald Draine, Sr. ~1927-2001

Donald Draine, Sr. age 74 of 2921 North Market Street died February 17, 2001 in Milford, CT.

He was a retired supervisor for Amtrak and a Navy veteran of WW II and Korean War. He was a member of the Nanticoke-Leni-Lenape Tribe of NJ. He is the son of the late Sol and Cora Draine.

He is survived by his wife, Bessie H. Draine; daughter, Alesia Pratcher; son, Donald Draine, Jr.; brothers, Gerald and Gordon, Jr.; sisters, Brenda Michmiewicc and Geraldine Draine; step-sons, Eugene and Gary Hughes; 6 grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

A viewing will be 1-3 pm, Sunday, February 25, 2001 at the SCHOENBERG MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 519 Philadelphia Pike with a service at 2:40 pm. Interment will be in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association, 1096 Churchmans Road, Newark, DE 19713.

 

Edward Wilson Draine Jr. 1932-2007

Edward Wilson Draine Jr., 75, of 1016 Lockett Drive, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2007, at his residence. He had been in declining health for the past month. Born Oct. 22, 1932, in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Edward Wilson Draine Sr. and the late Millie Durham Draine.

Mr. Draine had lived in Virginia Beach prior to moving to Danville in 1989. He had retired from the Pepsi Cola Company, where he worked as both a route driver and a mechanic; after his retirement he worked as a driver for the Peneske Company. He was of the Methodist faith. Mr. Draine was a member of the native Americans, Nanticoke Association. He was first married to the late Loretta C. Carney, who died in 2001. He married Victoria "Vickie" Lee Bohannon Draine on Oct. 5, 2001.

In addition to his wife, of the residence, he is survived by two daughters, Jamie Renshaw of Edenton, N.C. and Jackie Morris of Cape Carteret, N.C.; two sons, Orville Carney of Magnolia, Del. and Mike Pope of New Castle, Del.; two stepsons, Andrew Hodnett of Buffalo, N.Y. and Robert Hodnett of Danville; two brothers, Eugene Draine of Lewes, Del. and Phillip Draine of Lancaster, Calif.; three sisters, Nancy Seeney of Lewes, Del., Grace Jackson and Linda Wright, both of Millsboro, Del.; eight grandchildren, Shauni and J.D. Renshaw, Kristopher and Kristian Morris, Tanisha and Eddie Pope, Andrew Jr. and Andre Hodnett; and one great-granddaughter, Rylee Morris.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 30, at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Entombment will follow at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 2, at Rosewood Memorial Park in Virginia Beach. The family received friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 29, at Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel; at other times they will be at the residence, 1016 Lockett Drive. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Hospice Support Services Inc., P.O. Box 2713, Danville, VA 24541. Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

 

Gregory M. Drain ~1956-2004

Gregory M. Drain of Harbeson died Tuesday, March 30, 2004, in his home. He was 48. Mr. Drain was born in Delaware, son of the late Jesse B. Drain and Thelma M. Drain.

He grew up in the Lewes area. He graduated from Cape Henlopen High School. Mr. Drain was employed for the past 10 years by Sherman Heating Oils Inc. as a propane-truck driver and backhoe operator. He also owned and operated Strawberry Land on Route 5 with his family. He enjoyed farming, restoring antique tractors, woodworking, and spending time with family and friends on his farm. He was well known through out the community for his kind heart, generous spirit, and many friends. He will be sadly missed. Mr. Drain was a member of the Nanticoke Indian Association, a past Nanticoke Tribal Council Member, a past Nanticoke tribal drummer, a former Sussex Technical High School Advisory member, and an honorary member of the Indian River Volunteer Fire Co.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by several uncles, including the late Joseph Drain of Millsboro. He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Sharon L. Drain; his beloved daughter, Cherish A. Drain, at home; a sister and brother-in-law, Deborah D. and Edgar F. Maull of Lewes; a niece, Alexis Paige Maull of Lewes; two aunts, Nancy Waters and Mary Drain, both of Millsboro; and a host of cousins, fellow tribal members and special friends.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday in the Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call one hour earlier. Burial will be private. Loretta Carney Draine 1938-2001

Loretta Carney Draine of Danville, VA, formerly of Chesapeake, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, in Danville. She was 62. Mrs. Draine was born Sept. 1, 1938, in Delaware, the daughter of the late James Robert Jr. and Ethel L. Sammons Carney.

She and her husband and daughters had lived in Delaware before moving to Chesapeake about 20 years ago. Mrs. Draine liked to travel and visit her family and friends. She loved to visit her two daughters' homes. Collecting teapots was also a
pastime.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Clarence Carney. She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Edward Draine of Danville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Jamie and Eddie Renshaw and Jackie and Scooter Morris; two sons, Orville Arden "Tootie" Carney and Mike Pope; six sisters, Agnes Durham of Bridgeton, N.J., Harriett Street of Georgetown, Del., Emma Seeney, Leona Mae Alvino of Seaford, Del., and Janet Scotton and Frances Minner, both of Dover, Del.; six brothers, Melvin Carney of Texas, Donald Carney, Isaac Carney, Larry Carney, Ronald Carney and Roland Oscar Carney, all of Dover; a nephew who was raised with her, Reginald Carney; an uncle, Roland Carney of Dover; an aunt, Martha Carney Durham of Dover; four grandchildren, J.D. and Shauni Renshaw and Kristopher and Kristian Morris; and a host of sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A service was held Jan. 13 at the H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Chesapeake. Burial was in Rosewood Cemetery, Virginia Beach.

Minnie V. Drain ~1898-1993

Minnie V. Drain of Milton died of heart failure Thursday, Sept. 23, 1993. In Milford Memorial Hospital. She was 95.

Mrs. Drain was a member of First Congregational Church in Milton, and was a domestic worker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herschel Drain, in 1984. She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Chapel of Short Funeral Home, Federal Street, Milton, where friends and family may call one hour before the services. Burial will follow immediately in Congregational Cemetery in Milton. Arrangements are by Short Funeral Services. Milton.

 

Robert N. Draine ~1915-1999

Robert N. Draine of Millsboro died Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999, in Milford Memorial Hospital. He was 84.
Mr. Draine was born in Lewes, the son of the late Nelson and Margaret Morris  Draine.

He was a retired farmer and carpenter.  Mr. Draine was a member of the Harmony United Methodist Church, Millsboro.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eunice M. Harmon Draine, in 1992.  He is survived by two sons, Chauncey S. Draine of Millsboro and Robert G. Draine Sr. of Baltimore; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Thelma Meredith Street Draine 1923-2004

Thelma Meredith Street Draine of Millsboro died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2004, in her home surrounded by her family. She was 81.  Mrs. Draine was born Aug. 12, 1923, in Millsboro, daughter of the late Harry and Mary Thompson Street.

She had spent her entire life in Millsboro. She and her husband, Richard Draine, owned and operated Richard's Pure Service Station on Del. 5 in Harbeson for more than 24 years. She closed the station after the death of her husband.  Mrs. Ford was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Millsboro, and the Nanticoke Indian Association.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Draine, in 1982.  She is survived by a son, William Draine of Millsboro; a brother, Clinton Street of Millsboro; a sister, Beatrice Johnson of Millsboro; a niece, Linda Johnson of Los Angeles; and many cousins and friends.

Friends may call Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Seventh Day Adventist Church.  Graveside services will be 1:30 Sunday in Indian Mission United Methodist Church.




Anne Rigg Dreibelbis 1927-1998

Anne Rigg Dreibelbis, of Chestertown, and formerly of Merion, Pa., died Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998, in Corsica Hills Nursing Center, Centreville. She was 71.

Mrs. Dreibelbis was born in Philadelphia, the daughter of the late Worrell A. Rigg and Catherine Durham Rigg. She was a 1945 graduate of Lower Merion High School.

She married Charles B. Dreibelbis Sr. in 1946. Mrs. Dreibelbis and her husband made their home in Merion, Pa. She worked as a telephone operator with Main Line Medical from 1955-'70. She then worked as a central station manager with Piquet Security, from 1970-'83. Mrs. Dreibelbis also worked as a central station manager with Electronic Security, retiring in 1992.

She was very active as a Scout Leader with the Girl Scouts of America while in Pennsylvania. She moved to Rolphs Wharf, in Chestertown, to live with her son after her retirement. Mrs. Dreibelbis enjoyed reading.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles B. Dreibelbis Sr., in 1991. She is survived by two sons, Charles B. Dreibelbis Jr., of Chestertown, and Dale W. Dreibelbis of Narberth, Pa.; two daughters, Anne C. Dreibelbis of Chester County, Pa., and Gayle E. Dreibelbis of Narberth; and a granddaughter, Lindsey Anne Dreibelbis of Narberth.

Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Chadwick and McKinney Funeral Home in Ardmore, Pa., where friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Westminster Cemetery. The family suggests that contributions be made to the Diabetes Association, 1660 Duke St., Alexandria, VA 22314. Local arrangements by Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Chestertown.



James Edward 'Jake' Driggus ~1955-1998

James Edward ''Jake'' Driggus of Camden died Saturday, July 4, 1998, in Kent General Hospital. He was 43. Mr. Driggus was born in 1954, the son of Phyllis and James Driggus.

He served in the United States Army.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sons, James Edward Driggus and Steven James Roco, both of Dover; two sisters, Joyce Green and Jacklynne Driggus, both of Camden; an adopted sister, Jeana Bell of Camden; a brother-in-law, William Green of Camden; his grandmother, Melvina Browne of Smyrna; six aunts, two uncles, four nieces, two nephews, four great-nieces, three great-nephews, and a host of friends and other relatives.

Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Bibleway C.O.G.I.C., Kirkwood Street in Dover. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the church.  Burial will be in the Delaware Veterans Cemetery, Bear.  Arrangements by Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Dover.

She resided at her present address 40 years and was a lifetime resident of the Bridgeton area. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by two sons, Clarence J. 3rd of Millville and Irving E. of Elmer; and a brother, Frank Lloyd of Gouldtown.

1. Thelma Lucille Driggus of Dover died peacefully Thursday, May 11, 2006, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 79. Mrs. Driggus was born Sept. 11, 1926, in Hobbs, Md., daughter of the late Hoyt and Daisy Beulah.

She worked more than 30 years as a licensed practical nurse and instrument technician at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. Mrs. Driggus was an inspiration to all who knew her and did not let her physical limitations prevent her from being a servant of the Lord.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Driggus; two sisters; and six brothers. She is survived by a daughter, Lisa (Driggus) Brokenbrough; four grandchildren; two brothers; three sisters; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in the First Baptist Church of Cheswold, 291 Rose Bowl Road, Dover, where friends may call two hours earlier and from 6 to 8 p.m. today.

Walter L. Driggus ~1925-1994

Walter L. Driggus, 67, of RD 7 Reeves Road, Bridgeton, died Saturday at his home. Born in Millville, he was the son of the late Clarence and Blanche (Pierce) Driggus and was an area resident all his life.

He is survived by two sisters Mary Hughes, with whom he resided, and Cynthia Pierce of Millville; a brother, Clarence Jr. of Millville; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday from the Russell C. Sheppard Funeral Home, 40 East Ave., Bridgeton. Interment will be in Fordville Cemetery, Fordville. Friends may call Tuesday morning one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

 

Francis "Jean" Dunmore 1920-2006

Francis "Jean" Dunmore of Millsboro died Saturday, March 18, 2006, in his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was 85. He was born Sept. 2, 1920, in Georgetown, S.C., son of the late Charles J. and Georgia Dunmore. He later moved to Philadelphia, where he met and married his wife.

Mr. Dunmore attended Dolan College of Embalming in Philadelphia, graduating in 1947. He served in the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant during World War II, receiving a Good Conduct Medal, an European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with four Bronze Stars, and a World War II Victory Medal. Mr. Dunmore retired from the U.S. Postal Service of Elkins Park, Pa., in 1984, after 39 years of service. He enjoyed traveling with his wife to visit family and friends, and traveling the globe to meet people and see the beauty of the world. He especially enjoyed the sound of music from big band performers and musicians. Mr. Dunmore had been a past Boy Scout leader. While in Pennsylvania, he was a member of St. Ann's Episcopal Church and a Vestry Youth Group leader. Upon moving to Delaware in 1989, he became a member of Israel United Methodist Church. He was also a past member of the Tuskegee Airmen of Philadelphia, a member of the John H. Porter Chapter of Dover, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10638 of Millsboro. In addition, he was part of the Public Relations Department of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Fondella Burton Dunmore; a son, Thomas J. Dunmore of Bensalem, Pa.; a daughter, Angela J. Dunmore of Millsboro; a grandson, Thomas J. Dunmore II; a granddaughter, Amanda J. Dunmore; two brothers, Herbert J. Dunmore of Elverson, Pa., and George J. Dunmore of Olathe, Kan.; and two sisters, Charlotte J. Dunmore of Pittsburgh, and F. Julia Dunmore of Philadelphia.

Services will be 11 a.m. Monday in Israel UM Church, Lewes. The Rev. Thomas Johnson will officiate. 1. Obituary: Christopher H. Dunning, of near Milford, died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 1981, in Milford Memorial Hospital after a short illness. He was 81.

Mr. Dunning was a self-employed horse harness repairman at Delaware and Maryland race tracks for many years. His wife, Mary E., died many years ago. He is survived by a sister, Pearl Shockley of Detroit.

Cornelia was the daughter of Augustus Wright and Naomi L. Brown. Raised and educated in Philadelphia. Moreover, she was employed by the Federal Government in the Aviation Supply Office for thirty years.

Affectionately known as "Sis" or "Connie" to her friends and family, she loved good food, intelligent conversation, sports, politics and animals.She was a member of the United Indians of Delaware Valley, Inc. and the Nanticoke Indian Association. She was a proud person who loved her Native American heritage. She made the transition on Saturday morning at 4:30 a.m. at Mercy Hospital in Philadelphia. She is survived by several cousins, some friends and her beloved Pekingese dog-person Shownie.
