Janie Alma Hall ~1923-2004

Janie Alma Hall of Millsboro died Friday, April 30, 2004, in her home. She was 81. Mrs. Hall was born in Oak Hall, Va., daughter of the late George Conquest and Addie Godwin Conquest.

She worked for Millsboro Poultry and retired from Cargill Poultry in Harbeson after 26 years of service. Mrs. Hall was a member of the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ Apostolic Faith in Ellendale, where she served as a mother of the church. She was also a former member of the St. Luke Baptist Church in Millsboro.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Robert A. Hall and David M. Hall. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Burless L. Hall Sr. of Millsboro; three sons, Burless L. Hall Jr. and Marvin R. Hall, both of Millsboro, and Ronald S. Hall of Frankford; five daughters, Margaret F. Conquest of Wilmington, Lillian Mitchell and Evelyn J. Waples, both of Dagsboro, Helena C. Harmon of Millsboro and Alfreda Johnson of Clinton, N.C.; three sons-in-law; three daughters-in-law; a brother, James Conquest of Chester, Pa.; a sister, Estella Conquest of Millsboro; a brother-in-law; four sisters-in-law; 29 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; and several nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the Calvary Pentecostal Church, Bishopville, Md. Services will be noon Saturday in the church, where friends may also call one hour earlier. Burial will be in Antioch AME Church Cemetery, Frankford. Arrangements by Lewis N. Watson Funeral Home, Salisbury, Md.

 

Jerome W. Hall ~1952-1998

Jerome W. Hall of Millsboro, 46,  died Monday, Nov. 9, 1998, at his home.  Mr. Hall was born in Millsboro, son of the late Winfield and Phoebe Harmon Hall.  He was a cook at the Villa Rosa Restaurant on Long Neck Road, Millsboro.

He is survived by two brothers, Robert Hall of Millsboro and Clayton Hall of  Richmond, Va.; three sisters, Barbara Vaughn of Newark and Ava Wright of  Millsboro, and Gladys Dixon of Aston, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.

Service and burial will be private.  Arrangements by Watson Funeral Home, Millsboro.

 

Laura C. Hall ~1908-1998

Laura C. Hall of Millsboro died of heart failure Thursday, July 30, 1998, in her home. She was 90. Mrs. Hall was born near Millsboro.  She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Hall was a member of the Harmony United Methodist Church in Millsboro.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Amos H. Hall, in 1982; two daughters, Radia Morris and Doris Johnson; and a son, Everett Lee Hall.  She is survived by a daughter, Edna B. Harmon of Millsboro; 15 grandchildren;  34 great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at the Harmony United Methodist Church in Millsboro, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.  Friends may also call from 7-9 p.m. Sunday at the Watson Funeral Home,  Millsboro.  Burial will be in Harmony Cemetery, Millsboro.

 

Iona B. Hamilton ~1915-2000

Iona B. Hamilton of Millsboro died Thursday, Nov. 9, 2000, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. She was 85. Mrs. Hamilton was born in Millsboro, the daughter of the late Lillie Mosley Johnson and the stepdaughter of the late Larry Johnson.

She was a retired domestic worker. She recently worked in homes in the Lewes and Rehoboth Beach area.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold E. Hamilton, in 1997. She is survived by three god-children, Sabrina Evans of Bear, Heather Blackman of Philadelphia and Edwin Skinner of California; two brothers, Rohneer Harmon of Philadelphia and Braxton Harmon of Millsboro.

Service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call one hour prior to service. The Rev. Claudia Waters will officiate. Burial will be in Harmony Church Cemetery, Millsboro.

 

Margaret Bernice Hands ~1919-2002

Margaret Bernice (Mom-Mom) Hands, 83 years old, peacefully departed this life at home on Thursday, August 22, 2002, surrounded by her loving family under Hospice Care. She was the daughter of the late Arthur Buelah Sammons and was born in Dover, Delaware on June 4, 1919.

She attended Fort Branch public school in Cheswold, Delaware. At the age of 21, she moved to Bridgeton and married James H. Ridgeway, who passed away March 19, 1947 and later married James E. Hands Sr., who passed away November 12, 1965. Mom-Mom's early employment included Ritter's, Crystal Laundry, housekeeping and being a great babysitter for her grandchildren. Because of her loving ways she was affectionately known to many as "Mom-Mom". Her greatest achievement was raising her family and being a homemaker. She also loved working in her yard, for which she received a certificate of recognition from the city of Bridgeton along with many compliments. She loved collecting dolls, cooking and spending time with her family. Mom-Mom loved the Lord and began her Christian life in Cheswold, Delaware and later became a devoted lifetime member at the St. John United Methodist Church, Fordville, NJ. While at the church she was involved with the United Methodist Women and she was a dedicated devotional leader, and she also ministered to the sick by making calls, reading poetry and sending cards. ("God Loves You and So Do I").

She leaves to cherish her memory, four sons, Eugene (Bucky) Sammons, Jimmy Ridgeway Jr., Billy Ridgeway (and wife Hester), Eddie Hands (and wife, Ruth); two daughters, Patty Pierce (and husband Kenny) and Connie E. Pierce (and Donald Coursey), all of Bridgeton; one brother, Luther Sammons (and wife Anna Bea) of Dover, Delware; two sisters, Edith Ridgeway of Bridgeton and Helen Johnson (and husband Jackie) of Cheswold, Delaware; sister-in-law, Christine Ridgeway. She also leaves nine grandchildren, twenty-two great grandchildren, one godson, Jimmy Sammons of Dover, Delaware and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and special friends.
She was predeceased by one son, Arthur A. Ridgeway; one brother William A. Sammons; and an aunt, Sue Mosely, who raised her following her mother's death.

Services will be held on Monday, August 26, 2002 at 12:00 noon a St. John's United Methodist Church, Fordville Road, where friends may call one hour prior the services. A night viewing will be held Sunday, August 25, 2002 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at the church. Interment will be held at Cedar Hill Memorial Park immediately following the services. Services are entrusted to Edwards & Son Funeral Homes, Inc.., Bridgeton & Salem, NJ.

 

Floyd B. Handsor 1941-2002

SFC Ret. Floyd B. Handsor, Jr., 61, of 5835 Memphis Street, Columbus, GA, died Tuesday, December 24, 2002 at Columbus Regional Hospital.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 30, 2002 at Peoples Funeral Service Chapel, 1604 Talbotten Road, Columbus, GA, with Chaplain Randall Bowden, officiating. Interment will be at Main Post Cemetery, Fort Benning, GA with full military honors according to People's Funeral Service of Columbus. Visitation will be today from 12:00 Noon until 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

SFC Handsor was born November 1, 1941 in Detroit, Mich., the son of the late Gertrude E. Richardson Smith and Floyd B. Handsor, Sr. He retired from the United States Army after serving 20 years. SFC Handsor received the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star and many other distinguishing honors for his military service. He was a retired civil service employee. He was predeceased by a brother Gary Smith.

Survivors include step father; Walter Smith of Detroit, Mich.; his loving wife, Betty Handsor, of Columbus; a daughter, Donetta Handsor of Atlanta, Ga; a brother, Mark Smith of Detroit, Mich.; three sisters, Silvia Thomas of Heath Springs, S.C., Diane Lewis of Woodbridge, Va., and Faith Clarke of Brea, Calif.; and a host of relatives and friends.

 

Alice Hansley 1923-2000

Alice Hansley of Dover died of natural causes Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, in Delaware Home & Hospital, Smyrna. She was 78. Mrs. Hansley was born Jan. 28, 1923, in Dover, the daughter of the late Crawford and Georgann Turner.

She received her education at Booker T. Washington School. Mrs. Hansley was employed as a housekeeper at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital. Her favorite hymns were "No, Not One" and "Where He Leads Me, I Will Follow." Mrs. Hansley was a member of Union Missionary Baptist Church, Dover, for 50 years, where she served on the mother's board as a missionary and pastor aide.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Hansley Sr. She is survived by three sons, Leonard R. Jr., Stanford W. and James H. Hansley; a daughter-in-law, Grace Hansley; two grandchildren, Jerome and James Hansley Jr.; an uncle, James Bryan; and an aunt, Catherine Slade, all of Dover.

Service will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at Union Missionary Baptist Church, 883 Lincoln St., Dover, where friends may call two hours prior to service. The Rev. R.G. Moore Jr. will officiate. Burial will be 11 a.m. Thursday. Arrangements by Minus Funeral Home, Dover.

 

James H. Hansley 1877-1974

James H. Hansley, son of the late Nehemiah and Sellestine, was born November 17, 1877 near Felton, Delaware and departed this life on November 25, 1974 after a short illness in the Kent General Hospital, Dover, Delaware.

He was a farmer until his later years. After the death of his wife, Nora, Mr. Hansley lived with his granddaughter, Mrs. Janet Parks of Felton, Delaware. He was a devoted husband (for over sixty years), father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather and was loved by all.

James leaves to mourn his loss a daughter, Mrs. Agnes May, of Felton, Delaware, one brother, Nehemiah (Mar), five grandchildren- Janet Parks and Geary Mosley of Felton, Delaware, Delores Winston of Phoenix, Arizona, James N. Mosley of Dover, Delaware Dennis Streett of Wilmington, Delaware; five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

The Late son of Leonard Hansley, Sr. and Nina Louise Cornish was born on November 6, 1955 in Wilmington, DE. He attended the public schools of Wilmington, DE. He was employed by Fibre Processing Company for 15 years. He had various jobs before then.

He loved his grandson Josiah dearly, he call him "bo and ornery butt". He love watching the Eagles play football it was his favorite team, he was a die heart Eagle Fan Randy having family gathering, he loved being a chief on the barbecue grill, playing basketball, football, and watching movies.

Stanford W. Hansley 1944-2007

Stanford W. Hansley of Dover died Tuesday, May 29, 2007, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 62. Mr. Hansley was born, July 19, 1944, in Dover, to the late Stanford and Alice (Bryan) Hansley, and was a lifelong resident of Dover.

He was employed as a chief custodian with the Capital School District for 22 years, before retiring five years ago. Mr. Hansley had attended William Henry High School, in Dover, in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and was a member of Holy Spirit Mission Church in Clayton. He enjoyed playing his guitar, especially in church, and was an avid motorcycle rider and Eagles fan.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Grace (Daniels) Hansley; two brothers, Leonard of Dover and James of Magnolia; and his aunt, Katherine Slade of Dover.

Funeral services will be Monday at noon in the Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church, 101 N. Queen St., Dover, where friends may call two hours prior. Cremation will take place privately. Instead of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to Holy Spirit Mission Church, c/o Pastor Samuel Simmons, P.O. Box 143, Clayton, DE 19938. Harriett Driggett Hansor 1859-1924

Harriett Driggett was born in Camden, N.J. March 15th, 1859 and died Jan. 30th, 1924.  At the age of nine years she came to Michigan with her parents.  October 28, 1878 she was united in marriage to Wm. Hansor and to this union were born nine children all of whom survive her.  She was converted in her early life and for twenty-seven years has been an active member of London church, Foreign Missionary and L. A. S.  She was a long and patient sufferer and always had a smile and pleasant word for everyone.  She was a faithful wife and kind and loving mother.

She leaves to mourn her loss her husband and nine children, David and John, of London; Claude, Mrs. V. A. Draper, Mrs. Geo. Dressell, of Milan; Mrs. Walter Long, of Maybee; Mrs. Frank Crittenden, of Pontiac; Mrs. Walter Knox and Lloyd at home.  Twenty grand children and one great grand child; three sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Gilbert Parrish, of Royal Oak, Mrs. E. S. Wilson, of Pittsfield township, Mrs. Frank Bixby, of Milan, Elisha Driggett, of Flat Rock, and W. T. Driggett, of Charlevoix.  Several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

We have lost our darling mother,
  She has bid us all adieu.
She has gone to live in Heaven,
  And her form is lost to view.
Oh, that dear one, how we loved her.
  Oh, how hard to give her up.
But an angel came down for her

William Hansor 1857-1936

William Hansor was born in Delaware June 11, 1857, and departed this life January 24, 1936.  He came to Michigan when he was a young man and was married to Harriet Driggett in 1877, who preceded him in death January 30, 1924.  To this union were born nine children, five girls and four boys, all of whom are still living.  He spent the greater part of his life in and around Milan.

He was a kind and loving father and will be greatly missed by all.  He leaves to mourn his loss.  His children,  25 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and a host of friends.

Bertha L. Johnson Hanzer of Milton died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, in Milford Memorial Hospital. She was 81. Mrs. Hanzer was born March 28, 1921, in Snow Hill, Md., daughter of the late Elway J. and Viola Tull Johnson.

Mrs. Hanzer was a dietitian aide in Stockley Center, Georgetown.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Hanzer; three brothers, Willie, Elway Jr. and Ira Johnson; and a sister, Carrie Settle. She is survived by a daughter, Teresa Denise Nash of Milton; a grandson, Therran Dennis of Newark, Md.; a granddaughter, Terandace Dennis of Milton; two sisters, Auriela Mills of Baltimore and Mabel Shockley of Milton; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

Services will be noon Saturday in Christ's Church, 2348 Hollymount Road, Harbeson, where friends may call one hour earlier. Burial will be in Congregational Cemetery, Milton. Arrangements by Young's Funeral Home, Milford.

 

Emily J. (Hitchens) Harper 1915-2006

Emily J. (Hitchens) Harper of Milford died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006, in the Green Valley Pavilion, Smyrna. She was 90. Mrs. Harper was born Feb. 14, 1915, in Millsboro, daughter of the late Joshua and Emily (Coursey) Hitchens.

She was a wonderful grandmother and great grandmother. She loved to make holly wreaths and being with her family during Christmas. Mrs. Harper was a member and attended the Friendship U.M. Church, Millsboro, before her illness.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Dolores H. Mills, on Feb. 3, 2005; a grandson, Orrin L. Teat, in February, 1994; six sisters; and six brothers. She is survived by two granddaughters, Emily A. Rogers of Dover, and Demetrius L. Summers of Milford; six great grandchildren, 15 great great grandchildren; and many relatives and friends.

Family may call from 11 a.m. to noon Friday at the Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call from noon-1 p.m. Burial and graveside services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Friendship U.M. Church Cemetery, Millsboro. The Pastor Willie Savage will officiate.

 

Dorothy May Thompson Harris ~1912-1980

Dorothy May (Dot) Harris, 68, of 23 Academy St., died Friday in Bridgeton Hospital following a brief illness. Born in Sussex County Millsboro, Del., she was the daughter of the late John Wesley and Mary Elizabeth Thompson and was the wife of the late Earl Harris who cited in 1974.

Mrs. Harris her husband operated a family restaurant for many years and she also did domestic work for many families in the Bridgeton area, She was a member of the Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church for 46 years and a member of the Alice S. Felts Federation.

She is survived by two sons, Rodger Harris and Stanley Thompson, both of Bridgeton; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Sarah Johnson of Philadelphia; a brother, Jeremiah Thompson of Fairton; an aunt; and a host of other relatives.

Services will be held Tuesday from 8 to 9 pm. from the Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church, Vine Street. Interment will be made in Cedar Memorial Park on Wednesday morning at 10. Friends may call Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Wesley's Funeral Home, 17 S. Burlington Ave.

 

Eliza Virginia Grinnage Harris ~1912-2007

Eliza Virginia Harris of Milford died peacefully in her home on Friday, Nov. 30, 2007. She was 95. She was the daughter of Solomon and Sarah Grinnage.

Mrs. Harris was a domestic worker. She was a faithful member of St. Paul United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Harris was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Harris; three sons, Paul Grinnage, George M. Harris and Norman Harris; two siblings, Blanche Anderson and Alfred Grinnage; and two grandchildren. She is survived by three sons, Marshall T. Harris, Wayne Harris and Edwin Harris; and two daughters, Vallie Palmer and Betty Harris.

A viewing will be from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, with funeral services immediately following. Arrangements by Minus Funeral Home, Dover.

Martha Lavinia Harris ~1916-2004

Martha Lavinia Harris, formerly of Penns Grove, age 88, on September 28, 2004 at Genesis Eldercare in Salisbury, MD. Daughter of the late Larry & Martha Pierce. Predeceased by her husband, Warren A. Harris.

Martha was a member and served as a Deaconess of Shiloh Baptist Church of Penns Grove for more than 60 years.

She is survived by her daughter, the Rev. Barbara Harmon of Berlin, MD; four grandsons, seven great grandchildren.

Services will be held at 11am Saturday, October 9, 2004 at Shiloh Baptist Church, Willis & Smith Aves., Penns Grove. Friends may call after 9am. Viewing Friday at BAGWELL FUNERAL HOME from 6-8pm. Eastern Star service 7pm. Interment Evergreen Cemetery, Salem, NJ.

Thurston Lamont Harris of Barclay, MD, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, in Millington. He was 21. Mr. Harris was born June 5, 1979, the son of Thurston and June Harris.

He attended public schools in Queen Anne's County and graduated in 1998. He was employed at Playtex by Barrett Temporary Services in Dover, Del. Mr. Harris was a member of Faith Unity Church in Millington.

He was preceded in death by a nephew, Tyjaye Harris Mosley; a grandmother, Betty Pritchert and a great-grandfather, James Pritchert. In addition to his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Jerome and Antonio of Barclay; a devoted friend, Donna Stafford of Millington; maternal grandparents, Vernon and Charlotte Butler of Barclay; paternal grandparents, Johnnie and Barbara Harris of Pondtown; great-grandmother, Ida Pritchett of Pondtown; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, great aunts, great uncles, and friends living in California, Delaware, Florida, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina, South Carolina, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

Tyjaye Curtis Mosley-Harris of Ridgely, MD, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, in Kent & Queen Anne's Hospital, Chestertown. He was 17 days old. Tyjaye was born Aug. 9, 2000, in Easton Memorial Hospital, the son of Tenisha Marie Mosley and Jerome Curtis Harris.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by maternal grandmother, Donna Marie Ringgold; maternal grandfather, Ralph Edmund Mosley; maternal great-grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Walter Ringgold, both of Ridgely; paternal grandparents, Thurston and June Harris; paternal great-grandparents, Vernon and Charlotte E. Butler, both of Barclay; great-grandparents, Johnnie and Barbara Harris; great-great-grandmother, Ida Pritchett of Pondtown.; three uncles, Tydell Edmund Mosley of Ridgely, Thurston Lamont Harris and Antonio J. Harris of Barclay; and a host of great uncles, great aunts, cousins of California, Delaware, Florida and Maryland.

Winifred Clark Harris 1924-2001

Winifred Clark Harris of Dover died Saturday, May 19, 2001, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 76. Mrs. Harris was born Sept. 13, 1924, in Norfolk, Va., the youngest daughter of the late Edward and Rosa Clark.

At the early age of 3, she moved to Dover, where she was raised by her grandparents, the late Rev. and Mrs. Joseph Ravy. Mrs. Harris graduated from Delaware State College Comprehensive High School. She received her bachelor of science degree from Delaware State University (formerly Delaware State College) and master of arts degree from New York University. She continued graduate study in English education at the University of Delaware and Temple University (ABD).

As a beginning teacher and chair of the English Department at Booker T. Washington Junior High School, she, along with several former teachers and others, became a charter member of the Alpha Pi chapter of the national sorority of Phi Delta Kappa in 1949. During the early years of Alpha Pi chapter's existence, she served as one of the basilei. She was very active in her community and helped organize the first Girl Scout troop for young African-American girls. She was also active with the sorority's youth group, called the Xinos. She became a charter member of the Dover chapter of Links Inc. and served as the chapter's first president. In 1997, she joined Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc.

Teaching and writing were two great passions in her life. Following tenure at Booker T. Washington Junior High School, she served as chair of the English Department at William Henry High School, Dover. She was appointed chair of the English Department at Delaware State University in 1966 and served as ETV teacher for one year. She received tenure as an assistant professor of English. She accepted the position of executive assistant to the president in 1972 and continued to teach English and linguistics classes. In addition to her duties as executive assistant, she also served as Title III administrator, director of federal relations and affirmative action officer. Although Mrs. Harris retired in 1993, she continued to teach as an adjunct professor of English until 1998.

As a lifelong member of Whatcoat United Methodist Church, Dover, she served faithfully, as a member of the Board of Trustees, the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee, the History Committee, the United Methodist Women, and the Altar Guild. She taught the Hour of Reflection Bible Study Class; she also was a lay speaker, a chairperson of the Council on Ministries, a coordinator of the Summer Day Camp, and an active participant in Bible Study classes.

Mrs. Harris was the recipient of many honors and awards. Three awards which are representative are: the Woman of the Year award - presented in 1983 by the National Association of University Women; the Community Service Award - presented by the Eastern Region of the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa; and the Certificate of Appreciation from the U.S. Department of Education for her work with post-secondary education in 1996.

Mrs. Harris often said, "While education, teaching and writing have been my passions, my greatest passion has been my journey in Christianity. I believe God chose me to sow seeds He has given me. One never knows which will grow - perhaps most of them will."

She is survived by a sister, Grace Driggus of Dover; two cousins, Hortense Christine Williams of Philadelphia and Ann Elizabeth Williams of Arlington, Texas; five nieces, Diahann Driggus Battle of Portsmouth, Va., Alicia Dee Williams of Philadelphia, Estelita Rene Milligan of Arlington, Cynthia Louise Williams of Philadelphia and Donna Williams McGhee of Norristown, Pa.; two nephews, Cecil Lee McMillan of Arlington and Brian Harrison Williams of Philadelphia; one goddaughter, Gayle Davis of Newark; four great nieces and four great nephews; one great-great nephew; and a host of other family members and friends.

Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday at Whatcoat United Methodist Church, 341 Saulsbury Road, Dover. Service will be noon Saturday at the church, where friends may also call two hours prior to the service. Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Building Fund at Whatcoat United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Whatcoat Cemetery. Arrangements by Minus Funeral Home, Dover.

 

Arrie J. Harrison ~1922-2008

Arrie J. Harrison, of Millsboro, passed away Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008. She was 85. Born in Millsboro to the late Samuel and Mary (Morris) Jackson, Mrs. Harrison was a member of the Harmony United Methodist Church.

She had a long career as a teacher, principal, supervisor and director of Wilmington elementary schools and as director of New Castle County elementary schools. In the late 1960s, Mrs. Harrison was appointed as director of elementary education for the Wilmington School District, becoming the first African-American to hold an administrative position and be a decision maker in elementary education in the state. She received a bachelor of arts in elementary education from Delaware State University, a master's degree in elementary education and her over 30 degree from the University of Delaware. She obtained certifications as an elementary teacher, elementary supervisor, elementary principal and director of elementary education. Mrs. Harrison was a teacher at Samuel B. Elbert Elementary and was a teacher and principal at Absalom Jones Elementary, Warwick Elementary and Martin Luther King Elementary. She also served as administrative director of elementary education of Wilmington public schools, coordinator of the New Castle County Curriculum Task Force and director of elementary education for the New Castle County School District, Area III. Mrs. Harrison was a member of many professional and service organizations, including the National Council of Administrative Women, Delaware Association of School Administration, Delaware Elementary School Principals Association, the Wilmington Chapter of the National Association of University Women, past president of the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Delaware State University Alumni Association and the Wilmington branch of the NAACP. She also served as secretary and chairman of the personnel committee for the Layton Home for Aged Persons, a member of the Links?Wilmington Chapter and member and plaintiff representative for the Brandywine School District, New Castle County Desegregation Advisory Committee. Mrs. Harrison was president of the New Castle County Alumni Chapter, Delaware State University; past president of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority; chairman of the Special Project Committee, Delta Kappa Gamma Society; and member of the Brandywine Professional Association. She received numerous awards, including Alumnus of the Year from Delaware State University, Woman of the Year from University Women, Delaware Women Remembered and the Presidential Citation from the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education. She also received the Outstanding Negro Woman from Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority.

Mrs. Harrison is survived by her son, Charles A. Harrison III and his wife Cathy; two grandchildren, Dawn Stanchina and her husband Robert, and Michael Harrison; her great-grandchildren, Madison and Cole Stanchina; her sister-in-law, Katherine Jackson; two goddaughters, Faye Blanks and Felicia Street Wright; one godson, Stanley Zakrociemski; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Alfred Harrison; and all of her siblings, Hersel Jackson, Helen Harmon, Herman Jackson, Preston Jackson and Kermit Jackson.

Funeral services will be noon Saturday at the Harmony United Methodist Church, Millsboro, where viewing will begin at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in Harmony Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Harmony United Methodist Church.

 

William 'Bill' Stanford Hart Sr. 1925-1999

William ''Bill'' Stanford Hart Sr. of Milford died of cardiac arrest, Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital. He was 73. Mr. Hart was the son of the late John and Margaret Hart.

He received a bachelor of science degree in secondary education from Delaware State University, where he earned four letters in basketball and football; and earned a master's degree in guidance administration and supervision from Seton Hall University, South Orange, N.J. Mr. Hart served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific, a veteran of World War II. He worked for many years as an educator in the Elizabeth, N.J., school system, where he was the first African-American in the school system, retiring in 1970.

He moved to Milford in 1987. Mr. Hart left a legacy of political firsts in the state of New Jersey. He was the first African-American councilman in East Orange, N.J., in 1960; the first African-American executive assistant to Gov. Richard Hughes in 1962; and was appointed the director of the New Jersey State Division of Youth in 1963. He was elected mayor of East Orange in 1970, serving two consecutive terms. He was also the first African-American to be elected mayor of a major New Jersey municipality.

He made an impact on everyone he met and left his imprint on everything he did, and was well-known to the local crabbers and fisherman of greater Kent County. Mr. Hart was a member of the Milford Lions Club; the treasurer/trustee of John Wesley United Church, Milford Neck; and in 1986, was inducted into the Delaware State Athletic Hall of Fame. In addition, he belonged to many social, civic and humanitarian organizations including: the board of trustees of Essex College in New Jersey; the advisory board of the U.S. Conference of Mayors; the executive board of the New Jersey Conference of Mayors; the executive board of the National League of Cities; a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.; a lifetime member of the NAACP; a lifetime member of the Big Brothers of America; and president of the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials.

He was preceded in death by a son, William Stanford Hart Jr.; a daughter, Cheryl Irene Hart; two brothers, John T. Hart and Arnold N. Hart; and a great-granddaughter, Armani T. Norwood. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Gloria Mosley Hart; a son, Robert Frazier Hart and his wife, Christina E., of Yeadon, Pa.; two daughters, Linda Violet Norwood and her husband, William O., and June Denise Hart, all of East Orange; a brother, Calvin C. Hart of Bergenfield, N.J.; three sisters, Violet Fitch of Lunenburg, Mass., Ruth Naomi Roach of Wellsville, Ohio, and Marjorie Carter of Ettrick, Va.; his mother-in-law, Hazel I. Mosley; nine grandchildren, Rhonda J. Norwood, Robyn D. Taylor, Randi L. Norwood, Vanessa C. Hart, Jamal A. Hart, Daron Stewart, Yasin Hart, Thomas W. Hart and John L. Hart; two great-grandchildren, Asia J. Watson and Keith P. Craig; and a host of loving relatives, friends and neighbors.

A service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Calvary Baptist Church, Del. 8, Dover, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Friends may also call 6-9 p.m. Monday at Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Dover. Burial will be private.

 

Earl Oliver Hayes 1943-2000

Earl Oliver Hayes of Milford died Saturday, July 1, 2000. He was 72. Mr. Hayes was born Nov. 29, 1927, in Bridgeville, the son of the late Annie Bell and Leola Hayes.

He joined the Air Force in approximately 1943. After serving in the Air Force in Biloxi, Miss., for four years, he began working for Service Trucking Co. and faithfully served Preston Trucking for 26 years. Mr. Hayes received many honors at Preston, including a Superior Performance Award in 1983 and the Triple Crown Award in 1989, and he became a member of the Million Mile Club prior to his retirement in 1987. Mr. Hayes attended Phyllis Wheatley Elementary School in Bridgeville, and later attended Frederick Douglass High School in Seaford.

He was united in holy matrimony to Beverly Ann Cooper in 1977, and to this union a son was born. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Bridgeville as a youth. He later became a faithful member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Milford for 21 years, where he served as a trustee, on the Usher Board, and as a member of the Methodist Men. Mr. Hayes began a joy-filled retirement of cross-country travel, camping and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Carney Hayes, and to their union four sons and three daughters were born; two brothers, Preston and Ellis Hayes; and two sisters, Rachael Hayes Beulah and Rosella Hayes Dixon. He is survived by his wife, Beverly; six sons, Earl "Butch" Hayes Jr. and his wife, Joyce, of Colorado Springs, Colo., William "Sonny" Hayes and his wife, Terry, of Chula Vista, Calif., Stewart "Bruce" Hayes and his wife, Phyllis, of Dover, Garry Hayes and his wife, Avis, of Houston, Marcus Hayes and his fiancee, Hilary Purnell, of Milford, and Robert "Bob" Winfree of Owings Mills, Md.; four daughters, Karen Clements and her husband, Gary, of Wildwood, Mo., Doris "Dee Dee" Mosley and her husband, Richard, of Ellendale, Kim Rooks and her husband, Stephen, of Lincoln, and Tahesha Tinsley of Harrington; a brother, Merl Hayes of Greenwood; two sisters, Marie Batson and Catherine Evans, both of Greenwood; his mother-in-law, Dorothy Brady Cooper of Dover; 17 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and sorrowful friends.

Service will be noon Wednesday at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Slaughter Neck, where friends may call two hours prior to service. Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions to: St. Paul United Methodist Church Building Fund. Arrangements by Bennie Smith Funeral Home.

 

Edward F. "Ned" Heite

CAMDEN - Some called Edward F. "Ned" Heite a walking encyclopedia. To others, he was a renaissance man. The 64-year-old former state archivist, archeologist and local historian, who died Sunday, will be missed by many who knew him.

"We have lost one of Delaware's preeminent historians of the late 20th century, certainly the last 30 years," state archivist Russell McCabe said Monday.

Charles Altevogt, vice president of the Historical Society of Camden, said he had only met Mr. Heite a few times but he seemed like a walking encyclopedia of information.

Society president Pat Dyer concurred, saying Mr. Heite attended a few of the group's meetings. "He was very knowledgeable on Camden's history," Mr. Dyer said. "I often liked to talk to him because he could tell me things that I didn't know."

Mr. McCabe called Mr. Heite one of the more interesting individuals he'd ever met. "He was a guy who just had a tremendous amount of learning, knowledge, experience ... you pick the words," Mr. McCabe said.

Mr. McCabe said Mr. Heite, who was the archivist at the time, hired him fresh out of college in 1978 to work at the archives. The two shared an interest and love of Delaware history and Mr. Heite nurtured that interest by setting him to work reading and sorting old land documents from around the state.

"That was one of the great things about Ned, he loved sharing what he knew," Mr. McCabe said. "I guess I'm just lucky enough to be one of those people." He said Mr. Heite loved the the minutiae of history. It was from the documents behind the stories that he believed history came. "The real stories," Mr. McCabe said. "There's no substitute for that. He always wanted to know the facts behind the story, the how and why and that's kind of what he stimulated in me."

Mr. McCabe called Mr. Heite a man of eclectic and broad interests. "No one knew more sailors' drinking songs from hundreds of years ago and could sing them on pitch," he said. Mr. Heite, he said, was curious about everything, not just history, and he could be a character at times, never squeamish about expressing his opinion or debating a topic.

Mr. Heite also studied history more physically, as an archeologist with his own business, Edward F. Heite Consulting in Camden. Mr. McCabe said the business did a lot of survey work for major development sites, particularly in coastal Sussex County. He also surveyed the area for Bowers Landing, a proposed development near Bowers Beach, on which an 18th century cemetery and farmhouse had been uncovered. According to archives, Mr. Heite and his firm worked on a site near Smyrna dating to 1771 and at a site off McKee Road in Dover.

He told the State News in 1995 that while it's important to record history, it's just as important to preserve community. "We ask questions of the dirt," he said. "I don't trust people. I trust the dirt. The dirt is always truthful."

Mr. Heite also had been involved in Camden politics as a town planning commissioner and commission chairman. In the early '90s, he won a lawsuit claiming that the Camden-Wyoming Sewer and Water Authority unfairly represented the population of Camden.

Mr. Heite's wife, Marilyn, declined to comment Monday.

Information from Torbert Funeral Chapel indicated that he will be cremated. There was no mention of funeral or memorial services.

Hazel Mosley Henderson was born June 18, 1906 near Milford, Delaware. She was the daughter of the late Joseph Thomas and Lola Seeney Mosley. She departed this life December 15, 1995 in Milford Memorial Hospital, Milford, Delaware. Hazel attended the John Wesley Public School when it was on the grounds of John Wesley United Church. She lived and worked for many years in Baltimore, Maiyland and New York City. When she returned to Delaware, she worked for Swift and Company in Felton, Delaware as a laborer until her retirement. Hazel was a dedicated but silent member of John Wesley United Church. She faithfully supported the Church and liked to be kept informed about all the activities. Her hobbies included knitting, crocheting and growing both inside and outdoor flowers. When visitors came, she loved to call their attention to these hobbies.

Hazel was predeceased by her parents, two brothers and three sisters. She leaves to mourn her loss a nephew, Wilson Sterrett and his wife Carmen; a niece, Barbara Jiggetts and her husband Charles; a niece, Constance Bessellieu, 5 great nieces, 2 great nephews, great-great-nephews and a host of cousins and friends. Hazel was blessed with a long and fruitful life. We trust that she will find peace as she enters the place which the Master has prepared for her.

 

Elmer Hickman ~1920-1995

Elmer Hickman of West Main Street, Millville, N.J., on Thursday, Nov. 2, 1995. Elmer Hickman, husband of Doris Burt Hickman, father of Preston Hickman, Frank C. Hickman, Margaret Camp and Vivian Pettit; stepfather of Kenneth Welden, David Welden, Marshall Welden, Shirley Teixeira, Carol Jean Griner, Darlene M. Durham and Connie L. Wagner, aged 75 years.

Barbara E. Mosley Hicks 1968-2008

Barbara E. Mosley Hicks, 39, of Fairfield Township, passed away Wednesday afternoon, April 2, 2008, after a long illness at her residence, surrounded by her loving family and friends. Born in Bridgeton, Nov. 26, 1968, she was the daughter of Walden "Tony" and Donna (nee Durham) Mosley, and the wife of Robert L. Hicks Jr.

Barbara grew up in the Greenwich area and had attended the Morris Goodwin School, and was a 1987 graduate of Cumberland Regional High School. She was employed as a Licensed Practical Nurse, with Pediatric Associates, in Vineland, for the past 8 years, and prior to that had worked for Chelsea Associates Pediatrics, in Ventnor. She also was previously employed with the Devereux Foundation, and with the city of Vineland Emergency Management System. She was active with the Cohanzick Soccer Club, and the Stone Dragon Martial Arts Club. She loved scrapbooking, traveling, camping, and trips to the Jersey shore. She loved life and just spending time with her children and family.

She is survived by her parents, Walden "Tony" and Donna Mosley, of Greenwich Township, her loving husband, Robert L. Hicks Jr., her children Brianna Nicole Hicks, Breslin Marie Hicks, Robert Louis Hicks III, all at home, Sharon Marie Hicks, of Texas, and Katrina A. Hicks, of Sicklerville; two sisters, her twin, Brenda Lore and her husband, Doug, of Alloway Township and Michelle Stiles and her husband, Calvin, of Vineland; and one brother, Steven W. Mosley and his wife, Tiffany, of Ga.; her maternal grandmother, Agnes L. Durham, of Greenwich Township; five grandchildren, Ayana London, Dymond Alexander, Mekhi London, Mikayla London and Rose; two goddaughters, Mailin Stewart and Kameryn Dunkins; one godson, Presley Durham III; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

A celebration of Barbara¹s life will be held on Sunday, April 6, 2008, at 2 p.m., at the Sray-Webster Funeral Home, 62 Landis Ave., Carll¹s Corner, Upper Deerfield Township. The Rev. James Dunkins will officiate. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. Tony W. Hicks

Tony W. Hicks, 41, of Cedarville, died Sunday at the King David Nursing Center in Atlantic City.  Born in Bridgeton, he was a resident of Philadelphia, Pa., for 15 years returning here five months ago. He was the son of Nina Williams of Cedarville and the late William Hicks Sr.

He was a nurse’s aide and was doing private duty work in Philadelphia. In addition to his mother, he is survived by two brothers, King Howard Williams and Charles M. Rucker of Bridgeton; and three sisters, Roselie Williams of Cedarville and Esther and Cynthia Thomas of Florida.

Services will be held 11 a.m. Friday in the Edwards and Son Funeral Home Inc., 208 B. Commerce St., Bridgeton.  Interment will be in Fordville Cemetery in Fairfield Township.  There will be no public viewing.

Janet Hitchens  1961-2006

Janet Hitchens of Wilmington died Monday, July 10, 2006, in Christiana Care-Christiana Hospital, Newark. She was 45.  Ms. Hitchens was born Jan. 1, 1961, in Milford, daughter of Alice B. Hitchens of New Castle and the late Reginald Hitchens.

She attended public schools in Wilmington, and graduated from P.S. du Pont High School.  Ms. Hitchens was a cashier at Acme Market for more than 15 years.  She treasured spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was a serious person, but had a loving heart and was giving. She loved clothes, shoes and jewelry.  Ms. Hitchens accepted the Lord as her personal Savior, for which her relatives praise God, and would often attend the Community Bible Deliverance Church, under the leadership of Apostle Kenneth Porter, with her mother.

In addition to her grandparents and father, she was preceded in death by a brother, Barry Hitchens; a son, Kevin Hitchens; and her husband, Harold Taylor.  She is survived by her mother, Alice B. Hitchens of New Castle; two daughters, Markesha Hitchens and Janette Hitchens; three grandchildren, Jah'quan, Emahni and Lawren; two brothers, Reginald C. Hitchens of Wilmington and Cory Hitchens of New Castle; a sister and a brother-in-law, Linda and Andrew Jackson of Magnolia; 10 aunts; three uncles; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Services will be 11 a.m. today in Harmony United Methodist Church, Millsboro, where friends may call two hours earlier.  Burial will be in Friendship Methodist Church Cemetery, Millsboro.

 

JoAnne Marie Bryan Hitchens ~1934-2001

JoAnne Marie Bryan Hitchens Age 67 of Laurel, DE died Sunday, September 2, 2001 in Christiana Hospital, Wilmington, DE.

She worked at the Acme in Laurel for 30 years. She also worked at the Dutch Inn in Laurel. She was born in Seaford, DE to her parents the late Samuel Bryan and the late Dorothy Bryan Collins. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her sister, Janie Kettle and her brother, Barney Bryan.

She is survived by her husband, Donald "Toby" Hitchens of Laurel, DE; daughters, Bonnie and her husband Terry Hastings of Milford and Cathy and her husband Philip Hudson of Laurel; sisters, Patricia Keebler of Rehoboth Beach, DE, Phyllis Romer of Laurel, DE, Doris Whaley of Seaford, DE, Peggy Mills of Seaford, DE and Linda Eskridge of Laurel, DE; grandchildren, Lori Dalton, Trey Hastings, Julie Snyder, Katie Putz and Andrew Hudson; great grandchildren, Courtney Snyder and Emma Snyder and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, September 5, 2001 at 2 pm at the SHORT FUNERAL HOME, 700 West St., Laurel, DE with Reverend Wayne Mathis officiating. Interment will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Laurel. A viewing will be held Tuesday evening from 7-8:30 pm and on Wednesday from 1-2 pm.

Juanita D. "Jimmy" Hitchens of Millsboro died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. She was 83. Mrs. Hitchens was born near Millsboro, the daughter of the late Dorsey and Anna Clark Johnson. She was a member of the Harmony United Methodist Church, Millsboro.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Amos Hitchens March 23, 1994. She is survived by a godson, Duane Johnson of Millsboro; two brothers, Gilbert Johnson and Everett Johnson of Millsboro; three sisters, Olive Walls of Wilmington, Louise Cangelose of Albrightsville, Pa., and Maxine Hitchens of Millsboro; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 8 p.m. Tuesday at Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call after 6 p.m. The Rev. Carl Jackson and Rev. Claudia Waters will officiate. Burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Harmony Cemetery, Millsboro.

 

Reginald Hitchens 1932-2005

Reginald Hitchens, 73, of Newark, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 1, 2006, in Christiana Care-Christiana Hospita,l after a long illness. He was 73. Mr. Hitchens was born Sept. 1, 1932, in Millsboro, son of the late Virgie May Conaway and Eli Hitchens.

He attended public schools in Millsboro. Mr. Hitchens was a service operator for DuPont in Wilmington. During his early years he was a farmer and a jack-of-all-trades.

In addition to his parents and grandparents, he was preceded in death by a son, Barry Hitchens; and a brother, Harvey Layton. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Alice B. Hitchens of Newark; two sons, Reginald C. Hitchens of Wilmington and Cory Hitchens of Newark; two daughters and a son-in-law, Linda and husband Andrew of Magnolia, and Janet Hitchens-Taylor of Wilmington; three sisters, Virgie May Rivers of Georgetown, Sarah Johnson of Newark and Thelma Miller of Millsboro; six sisters-in-law, four brothers-in-law; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and numerous friends.

Services will be at noon Saturday in Community Bible Deliverance Family Worship Church, 206-208 N. Union St., Wilmington, where friends may call two hours prior. Apostle Kenneth Porter will officiate. Burial will be private. Arrangements by Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Dover. Wayne B. Hitchens ~1923-2002

Wayne B. Hitchens of Millsboro died of a heart attack Friday, May 31, 2002, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. He was 79.
Mr. Hitchens was born in Millsboro, son of the late Joshua Hitchens Sr. and Mary E. Harmon Hitchens. He was a member of Dickerson Chapel A.M.E. Church, Millsboro.

He is survived by a brother, Thurman Hitchens; two sisters, Louise Adkins and Addie Davis, both of Millsboro; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Dickerson Chapel A.M.E. Church, Du Pont Highway, Millsboro, where friends may call two hours earlier. The Rev. Richard Worthy will officiate. Burial will be in Old Field Cemetery, Millsboro. Arrangements by Watson Funeral Home, Millsboro.


Bertha E. Hood ~1926-2007

Bertha E. Hood of Georgetown died Tuesday, June 12, 2007, in Harbor Healthcare in Lewes. She was 81.

Miss Hood was a member of Dickerson AME Chapel. She was a lifelong resident, working 35 years for Draper King Cole of Milton and J.G. Townsend Inc. Georgetown.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jessie James and Mary Elizabeth Harmon; two brothers, Jessie Hood and Francis Hood; and three sisters, Carrie Borkins, Marie Hood and Viola Hood. She is survived by her special nieces, Marie and Lottie; her special friend, Wally; a brother, Raymond Hood; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m., Monday in Harmony Cemetery, Millsboro. Friends may call from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St. Millsboro. The Rev. Marcus Briddell will officiate. Interment will be in Harmony Cemetery Millsboro.

 

Ella N. Spady Hood 1938-2004

Ella N. Spady Hood of Lincoln died of heart failure Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital. She was 65.
Mrs. Hood was born Dec. 12, 1938, in Cheriton, Va. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Atlas Leslie Hood; a sister, Fannie G. Spady; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Spady.
She is survived by four daughters, Christine Spady of Greenwood, Lestine Spady of Dover, Marcella Spady of New Castle and Olivia Guy Hood of Wilmington; two sons, Leslie Spady of Dover and Jay Collins of Dover; a brother and a sister-in-law, the Rev. Lawrence I. and Valerie Spady of Milford; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Mary L. Tucker of Dover and Grace M. and Carl Floyd of New Jersey; two aunts, Mattie Church and Lena Bruce, both of Wilmington; an uncle, Carl Claude of Virginia; six grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Services will be 3 p.m. Friday in Second Baptist Church, Dover, where friends may call one hour earlier.Burial will be in Siloam Cemetery, Slaughter Neck. Arrangements by Young's Funeral Homes, Inc., Milford.

 

Leslie Atlas Hood 1935-2003

Leslie Atlas Hood of Milford died after a short illness Thursday, April 10, 2003. He was 67. Mr. Hood was born Oct. 12, 1935, son of the late Howard and Gladys Hood.

He was employed at Perdue Farms in Milford until his health began to fail. Mr. Hood was an easygoing person.

He is survived by his wife, Ella Spady Hood of Milford; five sons, Elijah Collins, Leslie Spady and Atlas Spady, all of Dover, and Atlas Payne of Milton and Kevin Payne of Lincoln; four daughters, Christine Spady of Greenwood, Lestine Spady of Dover, Marcella Spady of New Castle and Olivia Guy Hood of Wilmington; two sisters, Kathryn Showell of Seaford and Cora Miller of Rehoboth Beach; three brothers, Courtland and Thomas Hood of Lincoln and George Arnold of Seaford; three brothers-in-law, Lonnie Horsey of Lincoln, Martin Miller of Rehoboth Beach and Lawrence Spady of Milford; four sisters-in-law, Mary Tucker of Dover, Grace Floyd of New Jersey, Edith Hood of Seaford and Sheila Hood of Lincoln; an aunt, Marie Taylor of Millsboro; three grandchildren, Christopher Spady and Candice and Faith Spady; his companion, Lillie Mae Marshall of Milford; as well as a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Walter W. Hood ~1927-2004

Walter W. Hood of Long Neck, formerly of Chester, Pa., died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004, in his home. He was 77.  Mr. Hood was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps.  He was a retired tool and die maker and machinist employed by Union Carbide Co. in Chester. Mr. Hood was a member of the Community Church of Oak Orchard, American Legion Post 28 of Oak Orchard and the Indian River Senior Center.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia. He is survived by his wife, Josephine; a son and a daughter-in-law, Barry M. and Kelly Hood; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Christine L. Hood, Marguerite G. and Michael Conaway, and Barbara J. and Sam Spangler; and five grandchildren.

Rosa Gertrude Jackson Hope 1919-1994

Church program: Rosa Gertrude Jackson Hope was born on December 10, 1919 in Wilmington, Delaware. She was the daughter of Isaac Chester and Hattie Hansley. She departed this life Sunday, March 27, 1994.

She received her early education at Fork Branch School in Cheswold, Delaware and later she received her G.E.D.

Some of her employers were: Triumph Plant, Elkton, Maryland, where she made explosives during World War II; Dover Bus Terminal as a waitress; Playtex Company, managed the Rosebowl Diner on Rt. 13; and her last employer was the Health Department of the State of Delaware from which she retired as a lab technician after 20 years of service.

She was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Clifford Russel Jackson and from this union, Bertha Carol Jackson was born. In the year 1956, she was joined in Holy Matrimony to the late Layton B. Hope, Sr. In this union, her family increased with four stepsons.

In the beginning she was Roman Catholic and then in 1974 the joined the First Baptist Church of Cheswold, Delaware under the pastorate of the late Rev. Calvin L. Jones. She served as an assistant church organist and church poetess. She was a member of the following organizations: Missionaries, Willing Workers and the Culinary department.

Rosa was a member of the Modern Maturity Center where she actively participated in trips, programs, and special dinners. Her special joy was learning how to paint as she attended her art classes at the center. Other hobbies included photography and writing poetry of which several have been published.

She has lived in the Dover area for most of her life and has gained numerous friends and colleagues who will miss her very much. Her daily life exemplified Christianity-always pleasant, smiling and willing to lend a helping hand.

She leaves to mourn her devoted daughter B. Carol Jason and son-in-law, William C. Jason III, four sons - James E. Hope of Newark, Delaware; Layton B. Hope, Jr., Daniel W. Hope and James M. Hope of Philadelphia, Pa.; one brother, Dawson Harmon of Mt. Laurel, New Jersey; two daughters-in-law, Laurabelle Hope and Mary Ellen Hope; two sisters-in-law, Louise Harmon of Mt. Laurel, N.J. and Georgia Cumber of Philadelphia; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Catherine Elizabeth Street Hopkins, 77, of Millsboro died after a brief illness, Saturday, Dec. 17, 2005, in the Harrison Center, Georgetown. She was 77. Mrs. Hopkins was born Oct. 3, 1928, in Millsboro, daughter of the late Martha Ann and Clarence A. Street. She grew up and spent her entire life in Millsboro.

Mrs. Hopkins was a faithful and dedicated member of the Millsboro SDA Church and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10638 Women's Auxiliary in Millsboro.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Noah L. "Junior" Hopkins Jr.; three sons, Sherman L. Hopkins of Sewell, N.J., Gregory W. Hopkins of Houston and Gerald A. Hopkins of Great Mills, Md.; three daughters, Martha M. Hopkins of Dover, Janice L. Hopkins of Chalfont, Pa. and Veronica L. Hopkins of Dover; nine grandchildren; a great-grandchild; four brothers, Albert N. Street of Bridgeton, N.J., Emory Street of Dover, Norman Street of San Diego and Sherman Street of Dover; and three sisters, Tressa Carney of Millsboro, Elva Morris of St. Augustine, Fla. and Shirley Daisey of Dover.

I do believe there is a connection between the two families. Most likely part of the group that did not move to the Cheswold area.. The Beckett family is a well known family in the Frankford area. They are/were very well known due to a singing group they formed. They were members to a AME church in Frankford, somewhat again sister church to Harmony. I have seen them perform several times when I was young. I know that my great grandparents would travel to Frankford to hear them perform many years ago. They were well known and loved in the Millsboro community.. between both the Harmony and Indian Mission Church congregation. The connection could have been with Nathan and Annie Harmon. Also prior there were many Mosley's, Harmons and other families that lived in the Dagsboro/Frankford area. Most did migrate to Cheswold area.)  

Hazel R. ''Mom Hazel'' Houston of Millsboro died of heart failure, Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, in the Millsboro Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was 94.  Mrs. Houston was born in Snow Hill, Md., the daughter of the late John and Mary Nelson. She went to live with Nathan and Annie Harmon, who raised her from an infant in Millsboro.

Mrs. Houston worked as a school bus contractor for 35 years. She began this career after riding with her father, Nathan, who delivered children to school in his wagon.  She enjoyed spending long hours keeping her eyes on the community from her front porch. She also enjoyed family reunions and keeping a full cookie jar for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Mrs. Houston was a lifelong member of the Dickerson Chapel A.M.E. Church, Millsboro, where she served as a missionary, stewardess and member of the No 2. Choir. She was also a member of the Sons and Daughters Chorus.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry E. Houston in 1940; a son, Henry; a daughter, Ruth; and a grandson, James Holden.  She is survived by a son, Harry S. Houston Sr. and his wife, Kathleen, of Millsboro; a daughter, Mildred H. Beckett and her husband, Benjamin, of Millsboro; a sister, Dorothy Buffalo of Camden, N.J.; a daughter-in-law, Ollie Houston of Georgetown; a stepson, William Beckett; six grandchildren, Gloria, Shirley, David, Harry, Lisa and Benjamin; nine great-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces.

Dorothy S. Howell   ~1912-2000
January 31, 2000

Dorothy S. Carter Howell, 88, of Salem and formerly of Bridgeton died Friday in the Salem County Memorial Hospital after an extended illness.

A resident of the Salem County Nursing Home for several years, she was the daughter of the late Harvey and Clorinda Stevenson and the wife of the late Omah "Jerry" Howell. She was a seamstress, and a former member of the Ladies of the Moose Lodge.

Surviving are a grandson, Robert P. Carter of Millville; and three great-grandchildren, Samantha Marie Johnson, Christian Wayne Johnson, And Allison Beth Johnson. She was predeceased by a daughter, Joan E. Carter; a half-sister, Ethel Rainear; and a half-brother, Earl Beckett.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton, where friends may call after 10 a.m. Burial will be in Overlook Cemetery, Bridgeton. Madeline V.

 

Esther Marie Hughes 1912-2005

Esther Marie Hughes of Dover died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005, in her home. She was 92. Mrs. Hughes was born Oct. 9, 1912, in Cheswold, daughter of the late George W. and Sally Belle Corney Carter.

She loved dancing, cooking for her family and taking care of her grandchildren. Mrs. Hughes was a member of the Immanuel United Methodist Church in Cheswold.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Hughes; a son, Larry D. Hughes; and a daughter, Marjorie Mosley. She is survived by two sons, Zahn Hughes and John Homer Hughes, both of Dover; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Esther Glendora Sammons and Anna and William Newman, all of Dover, Edith Pierce of Bridgeton, N.J. and Charlotte and John Gaines of Cheswold; 28 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in Torbert Funeral Chapel, 61 S. Bradford St., Dover, where friends may call one hour earlier. Burial will be in Immanuel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Cheswold.

 

Helen Dean Huneycutt ~1924-2004

Helen Dean Huneycutt, 80, of Mountain Home, N.C., died September 30, 2004, at the Pardee Care Center in Flat Rock, N.C. Helen was born in Bridgeton, daughter of Ethel Fithian Dean and Horace Dean of Fairton. She is the widow of the late Jay Doyce Huneycutt.

Helen attended high school at the Bridgeton High School, worked as a control analyst at the DuPont Co. in Deepwater, and served in the Coast Guard SPARS in World War II. Helen was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Fairton. She has lived in the Hendersonville, N.C., area for 52 years.

Helen is survived by her four sons, Bryan Huneycutt and wife, Jeanne of Santa Clarita, Cailf., Alan Huneycutt and wife, Susan Cornelius, N.C., Don Huneycutt and wife, Julie of Hendersonville, N.C. and David Huneycutt and wife, Vivian of Waxhaw, N.C. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Ashley Johnson and husband, Brandon of Santa Clarita, Calif., Joshua Huneycutt of Chapel Hill, N.C., Sarah Huneycutt of Charlotte, N.C., Anna Huneycutt of Hendersonville, N.C., Mark Huneycutt of Hendersonville, N.C., Courtney Huneycutt of Waxhaw, N.C., Brandon Helms of Waxham, N.C. and Dalton Helms of Waxhaw, N.C.

Sylvester Floyd Hunter, Sr., was born to the late Norma Constance Hunter on 23 December 1946. He grew up in Morrisville (Delair),, New Jersey where he attended Saint Cecelia's Catholic School and subsequently Pennsauken High School.

On 28 February 1964 Sylvester enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving a four year tour, most of which was spent in Europe and Vietnam. He served in the specialty of 1833 AMTRAC Tank Crewman. Sylvester served as a member of the United States Marine Reserve Corps until 1 March 1970.

On 21 June 1969, he was joined in marriage to the former Juanita Hannah English and they were blessed with four children; Sylvester Jr., Christopher, Meggan and Van. Although they separated in later years, Sylvester and Juanita remained close friends and a presence in the lives of their children. Sylvester worked as a laborer for many years until his health weakened and he was unable to work at his craft. A disabled veteran of the Vietnam Era, in 1990 he moved west to California.

"Sly" as he was affectionately known had numerous talents. He genuinely loved conversation, playing cards with his cousins, entertaining and cooking. He was definitely in touch with his feminine side when he was tooling around in the kitchen. Anyone that was a friend can attest to that. He had a huge heart and always had compassion for others. Sly was the kind of person that would give you the shirt off of his back if you needed it.

He is survived by his wife Juanita; children Sylvester, Jr., Christopher, Meggan and Van; daughter-in-law Rhonda; sisters Virginia Hunter, Bernetta Brown and Sharon Hunter; brother-in-law Dennis English, Charles Brown, Edward Humphrey and Mark English; grandchildren Zachary, Jared, Joel, Nicholas and Rosalind Hunter and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

 

Charles Edward Hurd 1942-2000

Charles Edward Hurd of Chestertown, MD, died Saturday, July 8, 2000, in Kent & Queen Anne's Hospital in Chestertown. He was 58. Mr. Hurd was born on March 11, 1942 in Chestertown, the son of the late John David & Helen (Maislin) Hurd.

Mr. Hurd was a graduate of Chestertown High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in the 101th Airborne Rangers in Vietnam, where he received two Purple Hearts and other commendations. Mr. Hurd was an avid sportsman. He was the recipient of the Golden Gloves and the Silver Gloves awards in boxing. He was also an accomplished marksman with the bow and arrow. He was also recognized for his skills in several archery magazines. He was a waterman, he enjoyed being on his boat in the Chester River. Mr. Hurd was proud of his American Indian heritage. He was an advocate of American Indian rights, and was a collector of American Indian artifacts. One of his greatest joys in life was spending time with his grandchildren. Mr. Hurd was active in his community, and he was a decorated fireman with the Chestertown Volunteer Fire Department.

He is survived by his childhood sweetheart and wife of eight years, Nancy Grussing Hurd of Chestertown; three daughters, Shirley Worrilow of Earleville, Md., Terri Smith of Chestertown and Pamela Morris of Perryville, Md.; three sons, Dick Manning of Chestertown, Jesse Manning of Million, W.V., and Charles Thomas of Elkton, Md., two sisters, Mary Grussing and Barbara Ann Dawkins, both of Chestertown; a brother, John Hurd of Rock Hall, Md., and 12 grandchildren, Katie, Dilan, Chelsey, Jenn, Ryan, Logan, J.D., Emily, Mandi, Carly, Christopher and Thomas.

Ephraim L. “Ike” Hymer ~1929-1996

1.  Obituary:   Ephraim L. “Ike” Hymer, 67, of Stow Creek Township died Sunday at the Memorial Hospital of Salem County in Mannington Township. The husband of Laura M. (nee Hewitt) Hymer, who died in 1994, he was born in Greenwich and was a lifelong area resident.  He had lived at his current address since 1957.  The son of the late Isaac and Anna Smith Hymer, he was a 1946 graduate of Bridgeton High School.

Mr. Hymer worked for several years for Anchor-Hocking Glass in Salem until retiring. Following retirement, he worked part-time for Leslie Fogg Tractors in Stow Creek   His hobby was growing vegetables in his gardens and giving them to neighbors and friends.

Surviving are six daughters, Cheryl Plummer of Lower Alloways Creek Twp., Linda Johnson, Janet Durham and Harriet Cuff, all of Bridgeton, Mary Dean of Hopewell Twp. and  Nancy Loatman of  Fairton; two sons, Donald Hymer of  Mannington and Ephraim Hymer Jr. of St. David’s, Pa.; 14  grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Helen Hymer of Camden.

Funeral services will be held on 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton, with the Rev. Deborah Steelman officiating.  Interment will be made at Overlook Cemetery in Bridgeton.  Friends will be received at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m.  Tuesday.  Memorial contributions are requested in Mr. Hymer’s memory to the Shiloh Rescue Squad, Shiloh, N.J. 08353.

(nee Hewitt) Hymer and father of Cheryl Plummer,  Donald Hymer, Linda Johnson, Janet Durham, Mary Dean,  Nancy Loatman, Harriet Cuff and Ephraim Hymer Jr.
