Ardis E. Seeney 1918-1999

With sadness I would like to inform all of the passing of Ardis E. Seeney, my mother, and widow of the late Dr. James H. Seeney, son of James Clifford, grandson of Frederick.  She passed on Friday, January 29, after a long battle with Alzheimer's.

She was the youngest of five children born to Isabelle (Miller) and Clayton Fox in Ann Arbor, MI, in 1918.  Her maternal lineage goes back to Granny Fountiane, an escaped slave who made her way to Canada, settling in an area between Detroit and Toronto.  Grandpa Fox was believed to be a 'Black Indian', as written about by Katz.

Historically, I believe there is a connection between the Delaware who moved north around 1750, eventually settling in an area outside Toronto, who were active in the anti-slavery movement, and my mother's ancestors who appeared in that area. (From Charles E. Seeney)

To the Mitsawockett list:  My Uncle Lawrence passed away Wednesday.  He took a new interest ingenealogy, and told me about Yadkin County, North Carolina Seaneys.  He is adescendant of that Owen who beamed down from Wales.  If you want moredetails, go to #141 at http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/e/a/David-A-Seaney/GENE1-0020.html

David Lawrence Seaney, 92, of Hendersonville, North Carolina, passed away February 14.

He was born December 10, 1909 in Robinson, Illinois, to David Bruce Seaney and Jessie Florence Treadway Seaney.  His great-grandfather, Sam Seaney, was one of the original settlers of Crawford County, Illinois. He attended school in Pontotoc, Mississippi, where his father went to farm, and completed high school there at Chickasaw College.

As a young man, he managed a Standard Oil station in Sawyerville, worked on a dredgeboat on the Black Warrior River, ran dry cleaners in Akron, Alabama, and was a member of the Alabama National Guard.  During World War II he worked for Remington Rand in Asheville, North Carolina.

In 1947 he moved to near-by Arden to raise chickens for the Campbell Soup Company. He opened a greenhouse with his wife,  Ressie Mae, when people kept asking to buy the mums he planted near the hen houses.  He retired from the florist business to build his own house and the Dogwood Mobile Home Court in Hendersonville, where he worked for nearly 15 years as flower consultant to a local feed and seed store.

Two daughters, Sherry Johnson of El Paso, Texas and Sarah Waechter of Hendersonville; and three grandsons, David, Joe, and Steve Waechter survive him.

On Mr. Seaney’s 90th birthday, his grandson David wrote of him:

"Since I was a little boy, I thought he was the most precious being on Earth.  He knew how to do all the little boy things and he seemed to enjoy them like a little boy too.  He liked to make bows and arrows out of hickory wood or flutes from bamboo.  He liked to build tree houses and plant gardens.  He liked to read stories and most of all tell them.  His stories were always good ones too, not like some people’s stories.  He liked to take walks by ponds and look and see if fish could be seen in the springtime.   He would tell me of things a boy could do in the woods to have fun like watch owls or harass hornets without getting stung, of course.  Most of all he liked to let me be a little boy.

"He will be dearly missed."

Sarah Seeney ~1921-2001

2. Sarah Virginia Seeney of Cheswold died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, in the Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital in Dover after a brief illness. She was 80. Mrs. Seeney was born May 11, 1921, in Philadelphia, the youngest of four children to the late Isaac and Lola Archer.

As a child, she was nurtured and baptized at the Bright Hope Baptist Church of Philadelphia, where her father served as a deacon and church clerk and her mother a deaconess. Mrs. Seeney grew up in Philadelphia and attended the public school system there until the 10th grade.

She married the late Richard L. Seeney and from this union, a son was born. She always encouraged her son to go further in school than she did. She was very proud when he graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y., serving as an officer in the Navy and later became a Corporate Executive. Although they had only one child, they helped to raise many other family members. "Uncle Richard and Aunt Sarah" became synonymous with mom and dad to many. The lives of Walter, Gerald, Richard, Tony, Sarah, Janice, Nancy, Karen and many others were impacted by "Aunt Sarah's" love and care, especially, during their formative years. She continued to raise Karen Sookie until her adulthood.

Mrs. Seeney was a loving and caring daughter to her ailing mother, whom she nursed and cared for until her death in 1970. She worked most of her adult life as a factory worker doing a variety of jobs from cutting fabric for women's clothes to cutting metal for containers. While working in the later position, she began to experience the loss of her hearing.

After her retirement in 1986, she moved from Moorestown, N.J., to Cheswold the birthplace of her mother's family.

She was active for many years at the Modern Maturity Center in Dover enjoying artwork for which she received several awards. In recent years, her hearing impairment became worse which limited her activities. She loved to work puzzles at her kitchen table and also loved "her" sports: football, basketball, baseball and also track.
